Head coach: Tim James (64-48 in 10 years here; 88-94 overall)

Returning starters: 5 offensive; 5 defensive

Key players: RB-CB Marquan Acklin (5-10, 165); WR-S Keanu Johnson (6-2, 175); QB-CB Cameron Sanders (5-9, 170); OL-DL Dennis Fortson (5-10, 220); WR-RB-LB Jalen Boykin (6-0, 220); Chris Diaz OL-LB (5-8, 220); K Caleb Serrato (5-11, 160).

Team strengths: Boykin has earned his teammates' trust and is a leader on both sides of the ball. Johnson and Fortson also bring a toughness to the defensive side, which could be infectious in a new 4-3 front seven under first-year coordinator Reggie Upshaw Sr.

"We have really emphasized teamwork lately," said Boykin, who has led the team in tackles the past three seasons and had 115 in 2018. "None of us are selfish. We work together well and want to prove the doubters wrong and teach our underclassmen how to be successful."

Team concerns: The roster sits at just over 40 and cannot afford many injuries. Bringing back the wing-T offense will require an inexperienced line to work into a groove. Replacing star athlete Alonzo Russell Jr. won't be easy, but many will now get their chance to shine.

Breakout candidate: Acklin showed off his speed and vision last season in gaining more than 700 yards of total offense. Now he looks to be a two-way force and intercepted three passes in one 7-on-7 camp this summer.

Season outlook: The Pioneers lost the first five games last season, allowing 23 or fewer points in each. East Ridge scored 22 or fewer points in eight games. If the offense can find a rhythm and control possession, this could be a .500 or better team.

A midweek season and home opener against reigning Class 1A state champion Whitwell should provide a good test of strength. East Ridge has hit the weightroom hard this offseason. Being physical on both sides of the field is something this team wants to hang its hat on.

"Everyone is going to play for each other," Fortson said. "We are stronger and I believe more confident, too. We need to play with the mentality that every down is the last two minutes of the game."
