The Signal Mountain boys' golf team has a repeat state championship well within reach, and the Eagles' Foster Wood also sits atop the leaderboard heading into the final day of the TSSAA Division I Small Class tournament.

The top four golfers for the Eagles combined for 10 birdies and carded a 9-over-par 297 Tuesday at the WillowBrook Golf Club in the opening 18-hole round in Manchester. They have a 31-stroke lead over Kingston for the team championship.

Wood birdied three times and parred 13 holes, and his opening 71 is tied with Waverly's Cayden Chambers for first place at 1 under par. Signal's Beck Lewis is one shot behind them after making four birdies Tuesday, and Eagles teammates Benjamin Burns and Ben Seay shot 76 and 78.

Sale Creek's Ashley Holland led all girls at the state tournament with 13 pars in her 82, tied for seventh place. The Lady Panthers are one stroke behind McKenzie for second place, while Summertown leads by 19 strokes after shooting a 149.
