Prep roundup: Gordon Lee defeats rival to start region softball play

Gordon Lee's dynamic pitching duo of Emma Minghini and Emma Langston recorded 14 strikeouts as the Lady Trojans defeated visiting Trion 6-1 in the GHSA Region 6-A public opener for each team Thursday night.

The softball rivals last met in the 2019 Class A public championship round, with the Lady Trojans winning their ninth state title of the decade and 10th overall.

Gordon Lee (5-2) scored four runs in the fourth inning to break open a 1-1 game in Chickamauga this time, the big hit a two-run single by Minghini, who pitched the first 6 1/3 innings to get the win, striking out 12 batters and allowing three hits and one run. Langston came on with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh and recorded the save with a pair of strikeouts.

Also in northwest Georgia softball:

Sonoraville 1, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 0: Lady Phoenix ace Taylor Long pitched a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts, with only an error keeping her from a perfect game. She also had two hits, while Kinsley Long drove in the game's only run. Haley Stahl was the tough-luck loser for LFO (6-4, 3-2 Region 6-AAA), allowing no earned runs and four hits.

Heritage 12-17, Southeast Whitfield 0-0: In a doubleheader to open Region 7-AAAA play for each team, Heritage (7-1) swept the Lady Raiders. Carmen Gayler, Sarah Haynes and Riley KoKinda each drove in five runs.

Ringgold 14, Murray County 0: Ava Raby hit a grand slam, Riley Nayadley added a pair of hits and an RBI and Maddy Bacon went five innings and allowed one hit for the Lady Tigers (6-3, 5-1 Region 6-AAA).

LaFayette 7, Adairsville 0: The Lady Ramblers (3-6, 2-4 Region 6-AAA) rapped out 16 hits, with Carlee Corbin (three RBIs) and Jaselyn Couch getting three each.

Coahulla Creek 5, Rockmart 2: The Lady Colts (9-2, 4-2 Region 6-AAA) rolled as Sophia Voyles hit a homer and drove in a pair of runs while also pitching a three-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Calhoun 11, Cass 0: The Lady Yellow Jackets (4-2, 3-0 Region 7-AAAAA) used home runs from Kayleigh Warren, Espee Reyes and Molly Banks to back the no-hit pitching of ace Maggie McBrayer.

Ridgeland 8, Northwest Whitfield 4: The Lady Panthers (4-5, 1-2 Region 7-AAAA) salvaged game three of the league-opening series as Jenna Morgan had a home run among her two hits and Bryanna Goldsmith was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

VOLLEYBALL

Heritage 3, Gordon Lee 2: The Lady Generals rallied from a 2-1 deficit after three sets to win, taking the final set 15-8. Kallie Carter led the way with 11 kills and six blocks, while Lauren Francis had seven kills, 19 assists and 14 digs, and Anna Wilks added 16 digs.

GPS 3, Soddy-Daisy 0: Caroline Lemons paced the winners with 14 kills, a pair of blocks and 11 digs, while Javaria Smith had 27 digs.

Notre Dame 3, Collegedale Academy 0: McKenna Brown led the Lady Fighting Irish with 19 kills and five digs, with Mary Fillauer adding 30 assists, four kills and five digs, and Lindsay Burns four kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks.

Dade County 2, Armuchee 1: The Lady Wolverines prevailed 19-17 in the third set. Logan Frint had nine kills and 12 digs, while Bailey Davis added eight kills and 10 digs.

Dade County 2, Pepperell 0: Zoie Smith led Dade with seven assists and seven aces, with Jordan Roden adding five kills and Delaynee Davis 12 digs.

Sale Creek 3, Marion County 0: The Lady Panthers improved to 5-0 (4-0 in District 5-A) as Lillie Morgan had 10 kills and nine digs, Ava Higgins 13 kills, Sarah Gibson 10 kills and Desiree Higgins 19 assists and six digs.

GOLF

Collegedale Academy boys 178, Chattanooga Christian School 200: At the Champions Club, Harrison Bundy led Collegedale with a 47, while Morgan Baldwin had the low round with a 40.

Collegedale Academy girls 101, CCS 103: Also at the Champions Club, Isha Desai paced the winners with a 44 and Ava Varnell topped CCS with a 48.

Sale Creek 82, GPS 95: At Bear Trace at Harrison Bay, Ashley Holland and Carley Wetnerill led the winners with nine-hole rounds of 39 and 43, respectively, while Olivia Scotchie paced GPS with a 47.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Signal Mountain 3, East Hamilton 0: Kara Wilson had a pair of goals and assists, while Reilly Furr recorded the shutout with 14 saves.
