Another college football program in the state known as the Old Dominion has gained a commitment from a Bradley Central High School star.
Tray Curry, who is entering his senior season with the Bears and is part of the 2021 recruiting cycle, has made a nonbinding pledge to Virginia Tech, doing so Tuesday via social media. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound receiver with great potential appears to be a nice fit for coach Justin Fuente's program, which has averaged 3,200 passing yards and 26 touchdowns per season in his four years leading the Hokies.
"What teams love is his potential, just how (high) his ceiling is compared to other kids," Bradley Central coach Damon Floyd said. "He's got the size, speed, and is very athletic. The guys who are going to these Power Five conferences, that's what coaches look for. He's got it all."
Curry follows his stepbrother and classmate, Bears quarterback Javin Burke, in choosing an Atlantic Coast Conference school and one in Virginia, but they are set to be future rivals: Burke committed to the Virginia Cavaliers on June 17.
Grand performances are expected again this season from Curry, who won't turn 17 until mid-September. Rated a four-star prospect by ESPN.com, he was a versatile asset for the Bears last season. Curry scored 18 touchdowns, made 30 catches for 555 yards and rushed for 665 yards, averaging 10.5 per carry. His phenomenal catches over the years include a Hail Mary touchdown against Maryville, as well as a Randy Moss-like score on a jump ball in the back of the end zone against Cleveland.
Curry was highly sought after by Southeastern Conference programs and also had offers from Louisville, Memphis, Nebraska, Virginia and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is rated the No. 63 wide receiver and the No. 421 prospect overall in the class of 2021 by 247Sports.com.
"Virginia Tech is definitely a program on the rise, and if you look at Coach Fuente's offenses, wherever he has been they are very explosive and like to throw the ball around," Floyd said of the former Memphis coach who was a coordinator at TCU before leading the Tigers. "I think Tray's commitment to them gives him a chance to reach his full potential."
