Prep roundup: Notre Dame repeats as district volleyball champion

Notre Dame High School's volleyball program simply refuses to be beaten by league foes.

For the second straight season, the Lady Fighting Irish went 10-0 against Division II-A District 2 competition. And on Saturday at home, they swept Silverdale Baptist for their second straight district championship, winning 25-17, 25-18,25-16.

Setter Mary Fillauer (31 assists) fed the attack well as McKenna Brown had 14 kills to go with eight from Peyton Woody and seven by Regan Wolf, who added a pair of blocks.

The Lady Irish (26-3 overall) were also fueled by Maggie Fillauer and Lindsay Burns with four aces each, and Riley McCormick led the team with 10 digs.

Notre Dame will begin region tournament play at home at 6 p.m. Tuesday against either Christian Academy of Knoxville or Knoxville's Grace Christian.

Silverdale, which was led in the defeat by Casey Neal (10 digs, seven kills) and Ashlee Kugler (20 assists, 12 digs), will begin the region tournament on the road Tuesday.

In a district semifinal Friday against Grace Baptist, the Lady Seahawks won 3-1, with the set scores 25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 25-22 and standout play coming from Shelby Evans (11 kills, nine digs), Casey Neal (10 kills, 22 digs), Ashlee Kugler (31 assists, 28 digs), Melanie Marcus (5.5 blocks, five kills), Avery Butterworth (22 digs, six assists) and Micaela Smith (five kills).

* The Dade County volleyball team finished second in the GHSA Area 7-A/AA tournament Saturday. Playing best-of-five matches, the Lady Wolverines beat Fannin County 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16 in a semifinal before being swept in the title match as Gordon Lee won 25-6, 25-16, 25-10.

Standouts reported for Dade County included (with combined statistics unless noted): Logan Frint (31 kills, 23 digs), Zoie Smith (45 assists), Bailey Davis (33 digs), Delaynee Davis (32 digs), Heidi Raines (11 digs, nine kills), Alleigh Daniels (14 digs), Freedom Cole (11 digs versus Fannin).

* Heritage improved to 27-5 by sweeping six sets Saturday: 25-6, 25-5 against Coosa, 25-13, 25-12 against Sonoraville and 25-17, 25-13 against Carrollton. Heritage standouts included Kallie Carter (combined 15 kills, six blocks), Avery Phillips (five aces versus Coosa), Aaliyah Rodgers (five kills versus Sonoraville) and Anna Wilks (six digs, three aces versus Carrollton).

Chattanooga Christian 3, Chattanooga Patriots 0: The Lady Chargers won 25-15, 25-11, 25-10 on Friday, led by AJ Johnson (13 kills, four aces, four blocks), Avery Ray (eight kills, two blocks), Emily Day (28 assists, four aces), Annie Johnston (three aces) and Amelia Bustamonte (six kills).

CROSS COUNTRY

Signal Mountain freshman Joshua Pote set a school record with a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) time of 16 minutes, 24 seconds as he finished 34th in the Jesse Owens Classic in Danville, Alabama.

He led the Eagles to the team title in the silver division, and seniors Colton Underwood (16:48) and Maxwell Sewell (16:55) and junior Kaid Boehm (17:00) also impressed in a race that included 112 schools from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Signal Mountain's girls finished third in the silver division with Sophia Gibby (19:50), eighth grader Hannah Laramore (20:07) and Kelsey Thompson (20:16) leading the Lady Eagles.

Chattanooga Christian senior Jack Cottrell (15:33) was eighth, with junior Carson Turner (16:15) placing 23rd. The Lady Chargers were led by senior Phoebe Moran (19:21), who was 29th in the gold division.

SOCCER

Baylor 5, Warren County 0: Aliya Cooper and Zoey Mize each scored a pair of goals as the Lady Red Raiders took down an opponent with 11 wins this season. Mize made the home lead 3-0 in the 46th minute as she sent a pass from the end line to Cooper for the knock-in. Addison Yelton and Campbell Hoss were in goal for Baylor, Baker Young had the other score and Jada Cooper and Elizabeth Stophel also had assists.
