Prep roundup: Boyd Buchanan sweeps district golf titles

Boyd Buchanan golfers swept the District 2 titles in Division II-A's East Region during tournament play Tuesday at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay.

Gavin Greeson and JK Walters carried the Buccaneers to the boys' team championship as each shot a par round of 72 before Greeson won a four-hole playoff against Walters to secure the individual title. The Bucs' counting foursome totaled a 330, 11 strokes better than runner-up Collegedale Academy, with Silverdale Baptist Academy (360), Notre Dame (377) and St. Andrews's-Sewanee (420) completing the field.

Collegedale's Morgan Baldwin (74) and Silverdale's Jackson Newman (79) and Logan Gadd (84) rounded out the top five individuals, and their teams joined the Bucs in advancing to the region tournament. Advancing to region as individuals are Notre Dame's Ryan Eiselstein, C.J. Petrin and Matthew Richardson, as well as St. Andrew's-Sewanee's Luca Malde and Tyler Rodgers.

In the girls' tournament, Boyd Buchanan's Abigail Robinson shot an 83 and won a three-way playoff on the first hole to capture the individual championship. The Lady Bucs totaled a 173 for a 20-shot margin of victory against Collegedale Academy, with Silverdale (201) third and joining the champions and runners-up in advancement to region competition.

Collegedale's Isha Desai (84) was the individual runner-up, with Silverdale's Cambelle Williams (84) and Boyd Buchanan's Madison Butler (89) and Mackenzie Savage (94) completing the top five. Notre Dame's Sarah Cate Richardson moves on to region as an individual.

SOFTBALL

Sonoraville 3, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 1: Lady Phoenix ace Taylor Long pitched a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts Wednesday to keep the team atop the GHSA Region 6-AAA standings at 10-2. Kinsley Long was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, with Molly Speach and Madisyn Volek each driving in a run as Sonoraville completed the regular-season sweep of LFO (12-8, 8-4).

Dade County 3, Trion 0: The Lady Wolverines (9-3-1) rolled to the nonregion victory behind Kami Counts' four-hit shutout. Kaitlyn Stinnett was 2-for-3, and Michaela Massey and Olivia Tierce each drove in a run for Dade County. I'Ziah McCutchins had a pair of hits for Trion, which dropped to 7-6.

Adairsville 4, LaFayette 3: Madi Ashley and Summer Burkett had two hits apiece for the Lady Ramblers (6-12, 5-9 Region 6-AAA), who committed three errors that led to three unearned runs for Adairsville (11-9, 5-8).

Rome 7, Chattooga 4: The Lady Indians suffered their first loss in eight games despite getting two hits each from Ella Hurley and Katie Williams, as well as two RBIs from Ramsey Elrod.

Cedartown 9, Southeast Whitfield 1: The Lady Bulldogs (15-7-1, 9-7) completed the Region 7-AAAA sweep of the Lady Raiders with three home runs among their nine hits to support Emma Arp, who pitched a one-hitter.

SOCCER

Soddy-Daisy 2, Rhea County 1: Maddie Mayo scored the winning goal on a 30-yard free kick with 90 seconds left in Tuesday's District 6-3A opener for the host Lady Trojans, who improved to 5-2 overall, and she also assisted on Alaina Pemberton's goal in the first half. Soddy-Daisy can take control of the district with a road win over Warren County (7-2, 2-0) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

GPS 3, Red Bank 0: The Bruisers, who are led by seniors Kylie Barry and Chapel Cunningham, won by set scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 26-24 on Tuesday. Statistical category leaders for Red Bank were Zoe Helms (11 assists), Bailee Phillips and Ashley Ware (four kills each) and Shante Smith (four aces). Phillips also had three aces, and Helms and Smith each chipped in three kills.
