Prep roundup: McCallie beats Baylor on Eric Rivers clutch shot

McCallie senior point guard Eric Rivers added to his laundry list of achievements with the Blue Tornado Tuesday night.

Rivers calmly hit what ended up being the game-winning 3-pointer with just over 20 seconds left in McCallie's 46-45 Division II-AA region rivalry win over Baylor.

Rivers led all scorers with 19 points and David Craig also chipped in with eight points for the Blue Tornado, who snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in region play.

Baylor (11-3, 2-2) could not sweep the season series after taking the first matchup last Friday. However, the Red Raiders do maintain the No. 2 seed in the region due to leading in point differential in their two games against McCallie. The Red Raiders were led by Troy Boynton who had 14 points.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage 75, North Cobb Christian 48: The Lions (19-2, 9-0), who have clinched the Region 7-A private championship and No. 1 seed for the state tournament (there is no region tournament), rolled as Jax Abernathy poured in 26 points. Nash Bingham added 17 points and five assist, while Evan Lester had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the winners.

North Murray 58, Ringgold 44: JaN'yious Ross scored nine of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Mountaineers (10-11, 5-9) to the Region 6-AAA win, with Dante Tidwell adding 10. O'Reilly Matthews led Ringgold with 18 points.

Sonoraville 64, Lakeview-F.O. 58: The Phoenix (19-3, 13-2) are in line for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Region 6-AAA tournament after Orry Darnell and Kevin Morrison scored 17 and 16 points, respectively. Cameron Gregg led LFO (11-6, 9-5) with 22 points, followed by JaMichael Davis with 16.

McMinn County 81, Meigs County 62: Hayden Frank scored 22 points and hauled in 12 rebounds, while Ty Runyan also had a double-double for the Cherokees with 10 points, 12 assists along with five steals and six rebounds.

Chattanooga Christian 48, Arts & Sciences 37: CCS senior sharpshooter Nick Eng drained six 3-pointers to lead all with 21 points. Boo Carter and Tink Scott also added 12 points each for the Chargers.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Ringgold 37, North Murray 28: Rachel Lopez had a game-high 15 points in this Region 6-AAA defensive battle, with Riley Nayadley adding eight and Maggie Reed seven rebounds for the Lady Tigers (15-8, 9-6).

Marion County 80, Richard Hardy 45: The Lady Warriors made 11 3-pointers and were led by Maddie Holder and Lorence Bradford, who finished with 24 points each. Marion County is now 15-7 overall this season.

WRESTLING

GHSA Traditional Championships in Macon

Class A: Trion remains in contention to repeat as Class A champions, though it will be an uphill battle after ending day one in third place. Mt. Pisgah Christian leads the class with 180.5 points, followed by Commerce with 171.5 and Trion at 154.

The Bulldogs have four wrestlers in the championship round and five more alive in the consolation bracket. Seth Huskins (120 pounds), Logan Eller (160), Zach Sharp (195) and Brantley Willbanks (220) are in the finals, with Daegan Vaughn (113), Crawford Lee (126), Bryce James (132), Toby Maddux (152) and Bladyn Bowman (182) remain alive for third place.

Mt. Pisgah has five finalists and six more alive in the consolation round, while Commerce has six finalists and three in the conso round. Gordon Lee is in 13th place with 49 points and has Zane Murdock (126) and Montgomery Kephart (170) alive in the consolation bracket.

The final two rounds of consolation competition and the finals will be completed by 7 tonight.

Class AA: Dade County sits a disappointing eighth after the first day of competition in Macon and has six wrestlers still alive, led by 182-pound finalist Cody Williams. Jake Gatlin (106), Cayden Cooper (145), Zac Smith (152), Landon Williams and Austin Sorrelle (220) are in the consolation bracket.

Chattooga has a pair of finalists among its three competitors still alive in Rowan Burdick (160) and Ty Veatch (220), with Hector Valez (120) in the consolation bracket. Shane Davis (126) and heavyweight Dakota Jones will represent Gordon Central in the consolation bracket.

The Lovett School leads a three-team race for the team title with 146.5 points, ahead of Fannin County at 136 and Oglethorpe County at 120.5.

The final two rounds of consolation competition in both classes and the championship round in each will be completed tonight, while the action begins in Class AAA.
