Chattanooga area volleyball teams go 4-1 to open TSSAA volleyball state tournament

The Fillauer sister combination jolted the Notre Dame volleyball program, which now stands one win away from a second straight trip to the TSSAA Division II-A state championship match.

After losing the first set in Tuesday's quarterfinal against Concord Christian, senior setter Mary Fillauer and sophomore outside hitter Maggie Fillauer helped lead a 3-1 victory by the scores of 21-25, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-23.

Mary's superb passing ignited senior Regan Wolf and Maggie, as the two had 17 and 16 kills. The Fillauer sisters combined for 43 digs and 22 kills, while Mary also notched 40 assists and three aces.

Riley McCormick had 31 digs and Sam Brown added nine kills for Notre Dame (30-5) which will look to extend their win streak to 12 as they face Battle Ground Academy (31-3) in the semifinals Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Middle Tennessee Christian.

In the Class AA portion of the state tournament, East Hamilton won 3-1 over Lexington, 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-13, in the first round.

The Lady Hurricanes (29-5) received dominant play from Maddie Allen (18 kills, 10 digs), McKenna Hayes (eight kills, five aces), Georgia Dobson (six blocks), Amya Sutton (five aces) and Laila Ankar (18 digs).

East Hamilton will face Anderson County (36-11) in the quarterfinals at 10:30 a.m. at Rockvale High School.

Signal Mountain's memorable postseason continued in Class AA with a sweep of Sullivan East, 25-15, 25-23 and 27-25. Kim Rackel's team has won every postseason match by sweep after losing its first four matches to start the season.

The Lady Eagles (18-16) will face Dyer County (39-11) in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. at Rockvale High School.

In Class AAA, Cleveland beat back-to-back state champion Nolensville in five sets, 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 15-10. The Lady Blue Raiders (37-11) will face Collierville (38-7) in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. at Blackman High School.

Class A's Sale Creek fell to two-time defending champion Summertown in four sets, 25-19, 14-25, 23-25 and 13-25. The Lady Panthers will face Westview (19-9) at 6 in the losers bracket at Siegel High School.
