Prep roundup: Early offensive fireworks lead Baylor past McCallie

A three-run first inning, highlighted by Henry Ford's two-run home run, staked Baylor to a commanding lead on the way to a 4-1 win over McCallie Tuesday. It was the Red Raiders' second win over their rival in as many days and the three-game series will conclude Wednesday at McCallie.

Freshman Matt Dill threw five shutout innings, scattering four hits, striking out four and not issuing a walk. Henry Godbout and Tomas Balincius combined to close out the final two innings, allowing just one hit.

Valincius went 3-for-3 and Hunter Herndon had an RBI as Baylor out-hit the Blue Tornado 7-5. Olin Johnson was solid on the mound for McCallie, allowing four runs over five innings and striking out six.

South Pittsburg 10, Whitwell 0: Kamden Wellington pitched a no-hitter, striking out eight, and also drove in two runs to lead the Pirates. Jayden Mount went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Luke Rector drove in three runs and Britton Case plated a pair of runs.

Sale Creek 14, Bledsoe County 0: Jakob Elrod drove in three runs, while Drew Hillian and Garrett Pickett each plated two for the Panthers, who scored at least two runs in all four of their plate appearances.

Boyd Buchanan 19, Bradley Knights 0: Read Butler tossed a four-inning no-hitter, striking out four. Eli Gardenhire had three hits and four RBIs and Conner Beard added three RBIs for the Buccaneers.

Knoxville Catholic 9, Chattanooga Christian 0: Ian Hubbard scattered four hits, striking out eight, and Adam Osborne drove in three for the Fighting Irish.

SOFTBALL

Meigs County 7, Harriman 5: The Lady Tigers pushed across three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to rally for the win. Sierra Howard had three hits and five RBIs to lead Meigs County.

McMinn County 5, Ooltewah 1: A three-run sixth inning by the Lady Cherokees broke open a close game. Reagan Wade had three this and two RBIs and Sadie Brazzell struck out eight in six innings for the win.

Soddy-Daisy 3, Silverdale Baptist Academy 2: It took 12 innings to decide the non-district matchup. Amare Starling went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Lady Seahawks.

Walker Valley 14, Rhea County 9: A seven-run fifth inning propelled the Lady Mustangs from a five-run deficit to the win. Kiara Nicholes and Amy Benson each drove in two runs for Walker Valley, while Michaela Taylor had three RBIs for Rhea.

Hixson 21, Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy 3: The Lady Wildcats struck for 17 combined runs in the first two innings as Savannah Martin, Morgan Delashmitt and Meghan Kernea all drove in three.

SOCCER

Baylor 4, Austin-East 0: Gui Gragnano scored a pair of goals for the Red Raiders and Nathan Andreotti had a pair of assists. Riley Shankle and David Wang also scored for Baylor (12-1), which out-shot the Roadrunners 9-4.

Class AAAAAA

Dalton 3, Glynn Academy 0: The Catamounts (16-1-3) dominated the battle of state powers and handed Glynn Academy its first loss in 21 games. Brandon Saldana got Dalton on the board five minutes in, a goal that stood up at the half. Yahir Paez put home a deep shot eight minutes into the second half to go up 2-0 and Zeke Ortiz added an insurance goal five minutes later to end the scoring.

Dalton will face the winner of the River Ridge/Lakeside-Dekalb winner Friday in the semifinal round.

Class AAAA

Southeast Whitfield 5, West Laurens 1: Jerry Favela scored a hat trick as the Raiders (17-2-3) overcame an early 1-0 deficit to reach the semifinal round, where they will face the winner of the Cedartown/Columbus winner.

After the initial West Laurens goal, Favela scored three consecutive goals, two coming before halftime. Diego Castillo and Leo Barajas added Southeast's last two goals.

Northwest Whitfield 4, North Oconee 1: Nico Cunascored a pair of goals and Danny Guerra added assists on the Bruins first two goals.

Girls' Class AAAA quarterfinals

Northwest Whitfield 2, Madison County 0: The Lady Bruins advanced to the semifinals for a second consecutive season, where they will face Jefferson. Northwest Whitfield has outscored opponents 16-0 so far this season, while Jefferson has outscored its foes a combined 23-1.

In Monday's other AAAA quarterfinals involving area teams, Heritage lost 4-0 to North Oconee and Southeast Whitfield lost 6-0 to Marist.

TENNIS

McCallie, which is currently rated No. 1 in the Universal Tennis national high school rankings, defeated rival Baylor 7-0 to clinch the Division II East Region title. The Blue Tornado (10-0) was led by Andreas Sillaste, who claimed a No. 1 singles win and teamed with Colin Tuttle for a doubles victory as well.
