Needing a win to help turn around a rare poor start to the season, the Ringgold High School baseball team got a big boost on the mound from Robbie Bates and Mason Burt to defeat Sonoraville 5-1 on Thursday.
Coming off a 12-1 loss to the same Phoenix in their GHSA Region 6-AAA opener, the Tigers (4-9, 1-1) evened the series as Bates and Burt combined on a three-hitter.
"Pitching and defense were much better this evening," said Ringgold coach Drew Walker, whose team reached the Class AAA semifinals a year ago. "Robbie and Mason did a great job on the mound, and guys stepped up with runners in scoring position and got the job done."
Conner Christopher had two hits, and Sam Crow, Brady Hermann and Aidan Hickman had RBIs for Ringgold, with Ty Gilbert adding a late homer.
Brock Clements was 2-for-2 for Sonoraville (7-4, 1-1).
Trion 10, Mount Zion-Carroll 0: Brandon Dover pitched a perfect game in five innings with 10 strikeouts. Kade Smith had a three-run double to lead the Bulldogs (6-4, 3-1 Region 6-A public).
LFO 3, North Murray 2: Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (7-5, 2-0 Region 6-AAA) won after Peyton Tipton singled home Eli Walker in the bottom of the seventh. Walker, who led off the inning with a double, had a pair of two-baggers, with Will Carroll adding a two-run homer and Tanner Mantooth two hits in support of Donnie Brown, who went the distance and allowed two hits and two runs and struck out 12 batters.
Coahulla Creek 17, LaFayette 2: Ryan Langford continued his torrid start by going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs for the Colts (6-6, 2-0 Region 6-AAA). Ben Glines was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Joey Estrada had two hits, both doubles, drove in two runs and scored four times for Coahulla Creek.
Coosa 7, Dade County 2: The Eagles completed a season-opening Region 7-AA series sweep as Gavin East drove in four runs. Landon Williams and Braylin Sullivan had the RBIs for Dade County (8-6, 0-3).
Silverdale Baptist 14, Soddy-Daisy 0: Maddox Jones struck out seven in five scoreless frames for the Seahawks (4-0), who got home runs from Cameron Mullins and Turner Junkins as they combined for five RBIs. Brett Rogers doubled twice and drove in two runs, and Brody Lamb went 3-for-3 and scored twice.
Silverdale Baptist 13, Caney Valley 1: Silverdale's Seahawks slugged five home runs to beat the Oklahoma team. Eric Boggess had two of the homers, while Turner Junkins, Brody Lamb and Ian Reagan had the others.
Sequatchie County 11, Grundy County 1: Baron Cribbs scored four runs and had two hits along with teammates Jaxon Boston, Tayvon Boston and Anthony Wright in the Indians' five-inning victory. Boston and Wright each drove in three runs, Boston doubled and drove in a pair. Javier Aguirre went two scoreless innings and struck out four to earn the win.
Miller School of Albemarle 2, McCallie 0: Despite Grayson Smith and Austin Breedlove setting 16 batters down on strikes, the Blue Tornado could not muster any runs as they were one-hit by Devin Christopher and Noah Murray in a loss to the Virginia program. McCallie's Carter Hewitt reached base twice and doubled. The visitors broke free in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer by Ryan Jones.
Boyd Buchanan 12, Providence Academy 0: Brody Johnston, a sophomore committed to Vanderbilt, doubled three times and scored three runs and fellow second-year standout Cooper Jones, who's committed to Cincinnati, homered and drove in a pair of runs. Boyd's Eli Gardenhire fired a one-hitter and struck out 10.
Boyd Buchanan 5, Walker Valley 3: Jacob Pickett drove in two in a four-run bottom of the fifth to help the Buccaneers fend off the Mustangs. Perry Griffin went 3-for-3 in the victory and had an RBI double. Cooper Jones picked up the win, striking out seven and going into the sixth, while Brody Johnson recorded the last five outs in a row for the save.
Sale Creek 3, Central 1: Camden Penny drove in a pair as the Panthers used a quick start in the first inning to gain a lead they would not lose. Penny also tossed 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief for the save, and Brayden Grimes tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
Notre Dame 6, Ooltewah 4: Abraham Shull threw a six-hitter, and Jackson Cooper and Braylon Hammond each scored two runs to help key the victory for the Fighting Irish. David Brownlee also had an RBI double for Notre Dame.
SOFTBALL
Soddy-Daisy 12, Central 0: Freshman Skylar Gooden was 3-for-3 with a trio of runs scored and a home run in the Lady Trojans' blowout victory. Jenna Sims also homered and drove in a pair, and Abby Faires doubled twice and drove in three for Soddy-Daisy (2-1). Regan Rowan tossed four scoreless innings and drove in a run.
McMinn County 14, Sweetwater 1: Emilee Patterson drove in seven runs and came a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Reagan Wade went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Sadie Brazzell struck out eight in six innings for the win.
Silverdale Baptist 12, Sale Creek 4: The Lady Seahawks scored eight runs in the top of the second inning, and McCade Cooper, Addison Keef, Amare Sarling and Bentlee Stiner all homered for the winners. Keef drove in a game-high three runs. Sale Creek's Brooke Raines went 3-for-3 with a solo homer.
BOYS' SOCCER
Soddy-Daisy 3, Grace Academy 0: The Trojans (2-0) found life after a scoreless first half as Jensen Harbaugh assisted and scored. Soddy-Daisy had a 14-3 advantage in shots and got goals from Jose Enriquez and Bradley Sills. David Lopez also had an assist.
TENNIS
Soddy-Daisy boys 9, Ooltewah 0: Tyler Eddy was stellar on the court as the Trojans' No. 1 player won 8-0 and teamed up with Conner Eddy for an 8-2 doubles victory. Josh Hicks and Jared Guadarrama won 8-1 in doubles.
Ooltewah girls 5, Soddy-Daisy 4: The Lady Owls won four of six singles matches, and Arely Rocha and Sydney Downard clinched the victory with an 8-3 doubles victory. Ooltewah's Olivia Brackett won 8-0, and Downard, Brynn Beckstrand and Kylie Ritchie also won singles matches for the victors. Soddy-Daisy's Ella Rogers won 9-7 at No. 5.
East Hamilton boys 9, East Ridge 0: Aarav Armin, Seth Norman, Het Patel, Shawn Paik and Payton Wood outscored their opposition 32-0 in three singles and one doubles match to lead a dominant showing by the Hurricanes.
East Hamilton girls 9, East Ridge 0: East Hamilton Maddie O'Brian and Lanna Ledford won competitive singles matches against East Ridge's Fidelia and Fabianya Gonzalez by the scores of 8-5 and 8-4 in the top two spots. Siya Patel was dominant with an 8-0 victory.
