The Southern League announced Wednesday afternoon that Jake Mauer of the Chattanooga Lookouts is its manager of the year.

Mauer, who is in his first season working at the Class AA level, is the first Lookouts manager to win the honor since Jayhawk Owens in 2004. Owens guided Chattanooga to an 87-53 record that season. Mauer had led the Lookouts to an 86-48 record entering Wednesday night's series finale in Jackson.

The Lookouts also entered Wednesday night with a chance to add the Southern League's North Division second-half championship to their first-half title. League teams that sweep the first- and second-half titles get to host the first, second, fourth and fifth games of the best-of-five divisional playoffs.

Chattanooga's record for victories in a Southern League regular season is 90, which was set by the 1992 team.

Mauer took over the Lookouts this season after spending the previous four years as the manager of the Single-A Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Kernels of the Midwest League, where he assembled a record of 316-241. Chattanooga begins its final five-game series of the regular season tonight, when the Lookouts host Montgomery.

The league also announced Wednesday that Jackson first baseman Kevin Cron is the MVP and that Birmingham starter Michael Kopech is the most outstanding pitcher.
