Lookouts lose 4-1 on ninth-inning grand slam

Wynton Bernard's grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning gave the Tennessee Smokies a dramatic 4-1 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts in their Southern League series opener Saturday night in Kodak.

Tyler Jay walked two of the three Smokies who scored on Bernard's blast off him to left-center field.

Until the ninth it had been an incredible night for Chattanooga on the mound, with Ryan Eades, Anthony Marzi and Williams Ramirez combining to pitch eight scoreless innings.

The Lookouts took their 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, when Chris Paul led off with a home run to left-center.

Chattanooga dropped to 14-22 in the league's second half and to 50-55 overall.

Game two of the five-game series is today at 5:30 p.m. Omar Bencomo (6-4, 3.90 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Lookouts, with Keegan Thompson (2-1, 3.77) scheduled for the Smokies.
