Herink to attend national combine

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Cleveland High School quarterback Austin Herink has been selected to attend the U.S. Army All-American national combine Jan. 5-6 at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas.

Herink, who has backed up senior Chad Voytik the past two seasons, started one game in 2010 when the University of Pittsburgh commitment was hurt. Voytik threw for 5,000 yards the past three seasons and is playing in the Army All-American game in San Antonio on Jan. 7.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound sophomore played admirably in a loss to Cookeville in his start as a freshman. He has participated in multiple quarterback camps -- including Schuman's Rivals Camp in Nashville; the Scouts showcase camp in Prattville, Ala.; the Under Armour Elite Camp; the Football University Camp in Atlanta; and the IMG All-Madden camp in Bradenton, Fla. -- and was named one of the top quarterbacks at each.

"It's a great honor to be invited to the [Army combine] camp," Herink said. "One of the reasons I tried this was because I saw how Chad went and was getting offers going into his junior season. It'll help me get a leg up on recruiting."

Herink is trying to create his own reputation.

"I'm not trying to be Chad," he said. "I just want to get in front of people and show what I can do. Recruiting has changed; it's not what you do during the season, but what you can do in the combines. They don't come to us; you have to go to them."

Herink said he has an open mind about expectations for San Antonio.

"I don't know if there are any awards, but I do want to leave knowing I did my best," he said. "I just hope to get in front of some coaches and make some memories."
