Around the Region: UTC men's golf team tied for sixth at Furman

Wes Gosselin and Lake Johnson shot 2-under-par 70s Friday to lead UTC to a four-way tie for sixth place after one round of the 19-team Furman Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at Greenville, S.C.

Those two are tied for eighth individually, and UTC is at 290, six shots behind leader Harvard. The top 12 teams are within eight shots of each other. Also for the Mocs, Andrew Weathers shot 74 and Brooks Thomas and Kory Webb carded 76s.

Baseball

- Host Cleveland State shaded Chattanooga State in two high-scoring TCCAA baseball games Friday, 10-8 and 11-8.

The teams totaled 15 runs in the fifth inning of game two. Jordan Ransom was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs in the first win for the Cougars (17-10, 8-3), while Devin Gardner homered and doubled and plated three runs and Sean McDermott hit two solo homers.

For the Tigers (18-7, 7-4), Danny Sirven was 4-for-4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs, Brandon Melendez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Conner Morro scored three runs. Sirven was 3-for-4 with an RBI in game two, when Nico Lares hit a grand slam, Grant Sane also homered and Hunter Parker was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in defeat. Cleveland State's Gardner and Hagen Wilkey each homered and singled, driving in three and two runs, and Ransom was 2-for-3 and matched their two runs apiece.

- Nationally 10th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan defeated No. 20 Bryan 6-1 on Friday in the first game of their weekend AAC baseball series. TWC is 21-7, 9-1 in the AAC; Bryan is 23-8, 7-3.

- Covenant College got two one-run USA South baseball wins Friday against visiting William Peace, 1-0 and 5-4.

Garrett Kriston pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the first game, and Julien Amorelli's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning provided the run. Trenton Nobles had two hits in each win and matched Alex Kerr with two RBIs in the second game, when Matt Reitz allowed just two runs and struck out seven batters in eight innings and the Scots (14-13, 5-6) survived a four-run ninth for William Peace (8-18, 1-10).

- Josh Roberts and Ryan Poole each was 2-for-4 in Sewanee's 3-2 SAA baseball loss Friday to visiting Hendrix (13-11, 7-3), and Addison Jones allowed only one hit pitching the last four innings. Kyle Schnell had a sacrifice fly for the Tigers (3-23, 2-8) in the ninth inning.

- The Lee University baseball and softball doubleheaders scheduled for Friday at Valdosta State were rained out.

Softball

- Chattanooga State broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the seventh inning of its first softball game Friday at Cleveland State and followed that 3-0 win with a 17-7 victory.

The Lady Tigers (21-9, 12-2) lost league offensive leader Courtney Styles for the season with an elbow fracture last weekend, but Jennah McElheney was 4-for-4 with six RBIs and Devan Brown was 5-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs scored in the second game, when Colbie Thomas was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and Shannon Plese was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

Jordan Roberts and Alexis Bonanno each was 2-for-3 with an RBI in support of Labrisha Washington's four-hit pitching the first game. Cleveland State's Courtni Hammers was 5-for-6 with two RBIs in the doubleheader, and Mallory Souther was 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs in game two.

- The Tennessee Wesleyan softball team improved to 8-2 in the AAC and 13-10 overall by beating St. Andrews 8-0 and 4-3 in Athens on Friday.

- Scoring four runs with two outs in the bottom of the last inning, William Peace (21-9, 10-4) beat Covenant 7-4 and 4-3 in USAS softball Friday in Raleigh, N.C.

Morgan Lane hit a three-run homer in defeat in game one for Covenant (11-12-1, 3-9), and Joni Johnson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jordan Brett was 2-for-2 with an RBI in the rematch.

Lacrosse

- The Tennessee Wesleyan men's lacrosse team split matches Thursday and Friday in St. Louis, winning 16-8 over Benedictine College and losing 8-5 to Missouri Baptist. The Bulldogs are 4-6.
