Running

* Covenant College was picked by USA South cross country coaches to finish second in the conference men's and women's conference meets this fall. Defending champion Berea was voted overwhelmingly to repeat both titles in the polls released Thursday, and Piedmont and Meredith were third and fourth in both. Covenant returns All-USA South runners Maggie Henry, Ashleigh Baker, Jonathan George, Micaiah Allison and Matt Seitz for coach Katie Stanford, and the season begins Friday evening with the Mountaintop Invitational on Lookout Mountain. The women's two-mile race is set for 6 p.m., the men's 5k for 6:30.

Fishing

* Cody Huff defeated Bethel University teammate Carter McNeil on Thursday in the final match of the Bassmaster College Classic Bracket on Watts Bar Lake - a three-day, eight-angler competition that included two other Bethel guys and Bryan College's Cole Sands and Conner DiMauro. Huff, who beat Sands in the quarterfinals Tuesday and McKendree's Trey Schroeder on Wednesday, earned a berth in the 2020 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Guntersville and $7,500 for travel expenses next year with his 9-pound, 14-ounce haul Thursday. DiMauro reached the semifinals with a win over Bethel's Garrett Enders.
