Area sports notes: Lee's runners rise in national rankings

The Lee University cross country teams moved up three and five spots this week in the coaches' NCAA Division II national rankings to No. 8 in the women's poll and No. 11 in the men's, and the Cleveland school had three of the four Gulf South Conference weekly honorees for the sport. For their performances in the Trevecca Nazarene DII Showcase, Celine Ritter was the women's runner of the week and Hannah Spooneybarger and Will Stone each was freshman of the week. Ritter won the 5-kilometer race in Nashville and Spooneybarger was seventh, as the Lady Flames prevailed as a team, and Stone finished 13th in the men's 8k.

Volleyball

* Lee's volleyball team lost 3-0 Wednesday evening at Emory, which is 13-1 and ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III. The set scores were 25-12, 25-14, 25-12. Hanna Matthews had 12 assists for the Lady Flames (6-7), and Mary Katherine Givhan led them in kills with six.

* Cleveland State defeated the Reinhardt junior varsity 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22) in Waleska, Georgia. Stephanie Burke had seven kills in the first set for the Lady Cougars and another seven in the last two sets, including the match-ender. Aly Grace Lemons was another offensive force with double-digit kills.

Soccer

* The NAIA's Dalton State men's soccer team won 6-0 at Sewanee of NCAA Division III on Tuesday, but the Sewanee women edged Dalton State 2-1 with just one shot in the second half. A goal credited to Isabel Washko in the 60th minute was the difference for the female Tigers (3-4-2), who got an early score from Addie Roemershauser. Keyle Snyder scored from a Maria Vazquez assist in the 77th minute on one of the 11 second-half shots by DSC (4-5). In the men's game, Amin Saheb Ettabaa assisted on the first goal, by Tom Bentham, and scored two of his own for the Roadrunners (9-1-1), and Justin Reischer, Taeylor Fisch and Giovanna de Souza also scored. Sewanee is 6-2-1.

* Tennessee Wesleyan pulled out two close Appalachian Athletic Conference home soccer wins Tuesday against Point - 1-0 in the women's game and 2-1 in overtime in the men's. Samantha Green scored for the Lady Bulldogs (8-2, 5-1) with three minutes left in the second half from a pass by Chloe Rootes, the reigning AAC offensive player of the week. Green took 14 shots, six of them on goal; the team's margins were 42-2 and 18-0. Point goalkeeper Martha Mormeneo made 17 saves. In the men's game TWU's Josh Conradie scored 11 seconds after Point's Guillermo Sofio in the ninth minute, but it was 90 minutes later before Sam Dodden broke the tie for the 20th-ranked Bulldogs (9-1-2, 4-0-1). They led 19-8 in shots, 8-3 in shots on goal and 9-1 in corner kicks.

* Bryan's Lady Lions won 2-1 in overtime in an AAC home match Wednesday against Brenau. Anna Sanders scored the winner at 1:05:51 from an assist by Xena Jesurum, who had double-assisted with Arielle Hansford on Kylie Murphy's equalizing goal at 11:12. Brenau (3-5, 3-2) scored in the second minute. Caragan Treola had six saves for Bryan (6-5, 5-1).

Golf

* The 12th-ranked Dalton State men's golfers finished sixth out of 19 teams Monday and Tuesday in a tournament at the Innisbrook club in Palm Harbor, Florida, and those ahead of them are Nos. 2, 4, 14, 5 and 1 in the NAIA poll. Tennessee Wesleyan finished 15th at 930. The winner at 873 was No. 2 Coastal Georgia. DSC shot three 298s for an 894, led by Matthew Cleary in a tie for eighth place at 219, Ben Rebne tied for 10th at 220 and Sport Allmond tied for 21st at 224 with Truett McConnell's Dawson Day from Trion, Georgia. Wesleyan's John Houk, Jeovani Veloz and Simon Nagy shot 225, 226 and 228.

* The Cleveland State men's golf team was seventh in a field of four-year schools at the 36-hole Georgetown College Invitational in Kentucky. The Cougars' Wes Spillers tied for 19th individually at 151, and Colbe Cagle was 26th at 154 with Gage Brakebill tied for 28th at 157.
