Area sports notes: Privateer's Lane Travis wins a national JO class

Lane Travis from Privateer Yacht Club won the Laser Radial class in the United States Sailing Junior Olympics Ready or Knot Regatta hosted Saturday and Sunday on Chickamauga Lake by the Hixson club and its Privateer Sailing Education Foundation. The regatta included 30 sailors, ages 7 to 15, competing in multiple races in four fleets. PYC had 10 entrants, and its William Buiel and Amelia Buiel finished second and third in the C420 class won by Ava Wilson of the Adelaide Sailing Club in Australia. PYC also had the second- and third-place finishers, Vash Balogh and Kaiulani Sherrow, in the Optimist class headed by the Atlanta Yacht Club's Leif Carlson, who won all three of that class's races. In the seven-boat Bic Open, William Bieber of Knoxville's Concord YC pulled out a tight duel with James Smith of Alabama's Lake Hauns club. The event also included a "green fleet" with 11 racing beginners.

* Also Sunday, Privateer won the annual Tennessee Valley Challenge Cup Regatta overall championship. Begun in 1987, it includes seven regional clubs competing for individual trophies in three classes as well as the overall title.

Golf

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team followed a morning 300 with a 289 and moved up into a tie for sixth after Monday's 36 holes in UAB's Graeme McDowell Invitational at Birmingham's Greystone club. North Florida led the 19-team field at 564, one stroke ahead of the host Blazers, and Arkansas State (573), Memphis (575) and South Carolina (584) also were ahead of UTC and Southern Mississippi. The Mocs' Connor Nolan was tied for 19th individually at 144, Will Porter was tied for 27th at 146 and Moritz Lammel shared 33rd at 147. All three shot second-round 71s.

* The Sewanee men finished sixth at 891 out of 20 teams Sunday and Monday in the Rhodes Fall Classic at Tunica National. Paced by Tommy Oliver's ninth-place 215 (76-70-69), the Tigers led all Southern Athletic Association teams in the event won by Huntingdon from the USA South by 27 strokes with an 846. Sewanee's Zach Russell shot 226, Michael Olmstead 231.

Soccer

* Covenant College junior Noah Lee was selected the USA South men's soccer defensive player of the week, and Covenant freshman goalkeeper Lucy Sandhoff was the women's rookie of the week. Sandhoff, from Chattanooga Christian, had nine saves in a shutout win over Berry College. Lee was a leader in three league shutouts for the 6-0-1 men, who outscored the three foes 9-0 and allowed only 14 total shots.

* Sewanee sophomore forward Evan Poole was the SAA men's soccer offensive player of the week after scoring all the goals in a 3-0 home victory over Guilford. His hat trick was all in the second half.

Volleyball

* The Chattanooga State volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 30-28) on the road Monday against the Cumberland junior varsity. Madysun Steele had 11 kills for the Lady Tigers (4-3), while Dakota Rawiszer had 17 assists, Kayla Ford 15 digs and Ricki Lynn Bickley 12 digs with five kills.

Running

* Covenant's Brandon Yeager was the USA South men's cross country rookie runner of the week for his 19th-place finish in the Wingfoot Classic won by NCAA Division I program South Alabama. There were 142 men in the 8k. Yeager is a senior but running college cross country for the first time.
