Volkswagen of America today reported that December sales jumped 20.3 percent over a year ago with the Chattanooga-made Passat's figures more than doubling.

VW sales last month hit 37,229 units, driven by the Passat, Tiguan sport utility vehicle and Golf SportWagen, the company reported.

VW sales for all of 2016 totaled 322,948 units, a 7.6 percent decrease over 2015 as the automaker tries to recover from the diesel-emission scandal.

Passat sales last month were 7,241 units, a 101.4 percent increase over December 2015.

Tiguan sales were 5,575, a 13.8 percent increase over December 2015, marking the best month ever for the vehicle, the company said.
