Emma Burgess, departed this life Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Memorial North Park Hospital in Chattanooga.She was the eighth and last child of the late Moses Allen and Carrie Boyd Allen-Smith, was born Nov. 15, 1926 in Five Points, Ala.At an early age, she confessed Christ and joined Sweet Home Baptist Church. After moving to Chattanooga, she united with St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Rev. Horace Scruggs, Emma and several other members of the church moved their membership to Miracle Baptist Church. There she was a faithful member until her health began to fail.Mrs. Darden-Burgess was a honor graduate of LaNett High School in LaNett, Ala. While attending high school, she met and later married the late Horace Darden. The pair produced two beloved daughters, Annie and Linda Darden, both of whom are retired educators. Both daughters provided support and special care for Emma until her demise.Emma worked for over two decades for Atlanta Life, Universal Life and Union Protective Insurance Companies, thus earning the nickname, "The Insurance Lady."She was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, one stepbrother, both husbands and other relatives.Emma leaves to cherish her memories, two very devoted and caring daughters, Annie and Linda Darden; one loving sister, Ida Mae Allen Houston, all of Chattanooga. She also leaves her nephews, Jesse (Joan) Houston Sr., Jesse Houston Jr., Calvin Michael Moore and John W. Allen, all of Chattanooga, William (Phylis) Ballard, of Maryland, Richard and Larry Darden, of New York; nieces, Johnnie Lee Allen; stepniece, Kathundra Smith, Chattanooga, Ida Mae Menear, Birmingham, Ala., and Tracey Finney, Nashville; sisters-in law, Carrie Darden Collins, Silver Springs, Md., Corene Darden Wells, LaNett, Ala., and Emma M. Darden, LaGrange, Ga. Cousins left behind are Jesse Traylor Jr., Annie Ruth Traylor Woodard, Calvin (Jackie) Bush, Harold Bush, Beverly Bush Scott, Rosalyn Bush Carthen, all of Chattanooga, Barbara Bush Jemison, New York, Joan Wilson, Talledega, Ala., Derry McCurdy and Barbara Frost, Dayton, Ohio, Alexander Henderson, Atlanta; one devoted cousin who was like a sister, Cleola Stewart, Adamsville, Ala.; and a host of other cousins.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, in the chapel with the Rev. George E. Woodruff Jr. officiating.Interment in Forest Hills Cemetery.The body will lie in state after noon today with the family receiving friends from 6-7 p.m. today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
