Sr.Robert William Baine Sr. went home to be with the Lord after a lengthy illness on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011. He passed away with his devoted wife, Idalene and family at his side. He was 83 years of age.He was born on July 27, 1928 in Chattanooga, to Joseph T. and Ida Carty Baine.Robert joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and completed basic training in Bainbridge, Md. He related that it was the hardest week he had experienced. He then was assigned to a minesweeper in San Pedro, Calif. He later switched to the U.S. Coast Guard, served with distinction, was Executive Officer in Greenland, Alaska and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. After completing his military career, he was employed as a supervisor at Central Soya and Chattanooga Housing Authority. He was politically astute and a frequent contributor to the internet and letter to the editors and elected officials.Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Ida C. and Joseph Baine; two sisters, Hilda Keeton and Glyndon Crump; one brother, Fred Tilford; mother-in-law, Auddie Hammonds; and father-in-law, Marshall Hammonds Sr.Robert will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 62 years, Idalene; four children, Beverly Poinson, Robert William Baine Jr., Sharron (Shelton) Langford, all of Chattanooga and Charlene Baine-Starling, of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Monique Poinson, DeAndrea Cooper, Monica (Emeri) Gordon, all of Chattanooga, Antonio Marble, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Ariel McConnell, DeLane Gordon, Johnathan Kurtz, Arica McConnell, Chaison Gordon and Alanna Gordon; sisters, Lucille Thompson, of Detroit, Mich., Brittie Ervin, Doris O'Neal, Mary (Raymond) Reynolds, Marjorie McBee, all of Chattanooga; brother, Reuben (Beverly) Baine; 15 nieces and nephews; a devoted friend and family member, Steve Kurtz; and a host of other family members and friends.Funeral services will be Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Charles E. Moore officiating.Burial: Chattanooga National Cemetery.Visitation will be today from 7-8 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.
