SEWANEE Evelyn Byrd Patterson, ne Hawkins, died on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Emerald Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, Tenn.She had suffered for several years from pulmonary fibrosis. Evie, as she was called, was a longtime resident of Sewanee, having moved to the mountain community from Davidson, N.C., in 1980 with her husband and four children.She was born in New York City on Feb. 26, 1931, and was educated at Chapin School, Smith College (B.A. 1952), and Radcliffe College of Harvard University (A.M. 1955). She pursued doctoral research in Greek and Latin at Harvard, with a concentration in early Greek art, from 1955 to 1960, and taught classics at Wheaton College, Mass., in 1959-60. She marriedWilliam Brown Patterson, a fellow graduate student at Harvard, in 1959. In 1983, she was appointed director of the Slide Library of the Art Department at the University of the South in Sewanee. She continued in that position until she retired in 1998. Evie and her family were members of Otey Memorial Parish Church in Sewanee, where she was active in the Altar Guild and the Community Action Committee. She worked regularly at the Sewanee Hospitality Shop to benefit the hospital.Evie is survived by her husband, Dr. William Brown Patterson, of Sewanee; her son, Dr. William Brown Patterson, of Ruston, La.; three daughters, Evelyn Byrd Donatelli, of New York City, Lucy Patterson Murray, of Augusta, Ga., and Emily Patterson Higgs, of Sonora, Calif.; her brother, Eliot Dexter Hawkins, of New York City; her sister, Alice Clarkson Van Tuyl, of Middlebury, Vt.; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Episcopal Relief & Development, 815 Second Ave., New York, NY 10017, or via www.er-d.org.A service in celebration of her life will be held at Otey Memorial Church in Sewanee on Saturday, Jan. 28, at noon, with a reception immediately following at Brooks Hall, next door to the church.Her ashes are to be buried earlier in the day at the University Cemetery in Sewanee at a family service.Arrangement by Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, 300 First Ave. NW, Winchester, TN 37398, 931-967-2222 www.moorecortner.com.
