Rev. Lamar S. Moore, 68, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014. Visionary leader, pastor to churches large and small, friend to an untold number of people, servant of God. No single label captures how special Lamar S. Moore was. He was a bright spot in the day of everyone he encountered. Born in Chattanooga, Aug. 3, 1945, he graduated from Kirkman Technical High School in 1963. Following graduation, he worked for the Electric Power Board until 1975, advancing from overhead line crew to be assistant power engineer in the marketing department. He received his Associate of Engineering degree from Chattanooga State Technical Institute (now Community College) in 1970. As an active deacon in Ridgecrest Baptist Church in the early 1970s, he was called by God into pastoral ministry. He attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., where he graduated in 1978. He pastored First Rock Haven Baptist Church in Vine Grove, Ky., Salem Baptist Church in Brandenburg, Ky., and Leoma Baptist Church in Leoma, Tenn. He returned to Chattanooga in 1989 to pastor Lookout Valley Baptist Church, where he served for more than 17 years. In addition to his pastoral duties, he served the Chattanooga area in a number of capacities, including the city's Human Rights Commission, the Chattanooga Police Department's Internal Affairs Citizens Review Board, the YMCAs Y-CAP Board, and as an officer of the Hamilton County Election Commission. He also has been an active supporter of Y-CAPs annual Guns and Hoses event. After leaving the full-time pastorate, he worked for Brookhaven Development in Franklin, Tenn. He also served as transitional interim pastor of First Baptist Church, Loretto, Tenn., Lookout Mountain Baptist Church, and, most recently, Clingan Ridge Baptist Church in Cleveland. At the time of his death, he was executive director of the Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers, USA and a chaplain of the Chattanooga Police Department. He was a member of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church. He passed away June 16 at the age of 68. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Thaddeus "Happy" and Flora Satterfield Moore; and three brothers, Wayne, Terry and Dale. He is survived by his loving and supportive wife of 49 years, Vicki (Conn) Moore; son, Andy and Christie, and their children Flannery, Percy-Kate, Ruby, Jack and Walker; son, Jeff and Amy, and their children Hannah Grace, Evan, and Isabel; and a daughter, Julie and Armando Barraza, and their children, Sam, Lucas, Ela and Benny; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Moore and Virginia Moore; nephews, Thad Moore and Tim Moore; nieces, Elizabeth Moore, Donna Bryant, and Vicky Grindle; and many cousins and friends. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014, at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Lookout Valley Baptist Church (23 Lilac Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37419) with Rev. Armando Barraza officiating.
