Alice Hamilton

CLEVELAND — Alice Salyer Hamilton After a short battle with leukemia, died peacefully in the company of family on Nov. 1, 2016, in Cleveland, at the age of 75. Alice is survived by her husband, Robert L. Hamilton; son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Robin Hamilton; granddaughters, Katherine Faye and Kristen Alyse Hamilton, of Cleveland; brother-in-law and sister, Mr. Richard and Dr. Margaret Brockmiller, of Maggie Valley, N.C. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, E. Kash Salyer and Elisabeth Wagner Salyer, of Cleveland. Alice E. Salyer was born on April 1, 1941, in Buckner, Ky. She graduated from Knoxville Holston High School, Class of 1959; The University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1963, and later from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a master of science in education. She began teaching for her alma mater, Holston High, upon graduation in 1963. She married Robert Love Hamilton in 1962 and they moved to Cleveland in 1964, where Alice began teaching at Arnold Junior High School. She marched with the inaugural class to Cleveland High School in 1967. She was appointed a Kentucky Colonel by the Honorable Governor Bert T. Combs in 1963. She taught mathematics throughout her career and enjoyed being the faculty sponsor for the Anchor Club. She also served as faculty adviser to the CHS Yearbook. She started the first computer laboratory and course at Cleveland High School. She was known as a dedicated and motivating teacher who truly enjoyed her profession. She retired in 2000 as Math Department Chair. She worked as an adjunct instructor at Cleveland State Community College for over 10 years, serving the computer science and mathematics departments. After retirement, she volunteered as a tutor at Walker Valley High School. She was a 50-year active service member of the Pilot Club International and supported their mission to influence positive change in our community. She also enjoyed service with the Cleveland/Bradley County Teachers Federal Credit Union as a board member. Alice requested to be cremated. Visitation will be announced soon. Her ashes will be interred at the family plot at Sunset Memorial Gardens in a private ceremony at a later time. Gifts in memory of Alice will be directed to continue her life’s work of mathematics education through supporting the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program at Cleveland High School.
