Byron Cox

Byron Culton Cox Jr., 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at his home. He was born Sept. 22, 1943, in Memphis, Tenn., and graduated from Memphis State University in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in business and in 1970 with a master’s degree in marketing. Byron worked at National Cotton Council and First Tennessee Bank in Memphis. He moved to Chattanooga in 1973 to work with Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company and retired in 1999. Byron served as adjunct instructor at Chattanooga State Community College then joined the Hamilton County Regional Planning agency in 2002 and retired in 2008. He was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Cox and his father, Byron Cox Sr. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Donna Cox; sons, Stephen A. (Jayne) Cox and Gregory J. (Lucie) Cox; four grandchildren, Tony, Alex, Frank and Madeline; sister, Mary (George) Klosterman; brothers, James (Charlotte) Cox and Thomas (Rebecca) Cox; numerous nephews and nieces. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Stephen Catholic Church with father Manuel Perez officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the church. Memorial contributions to Ladies of Charity, 2821 Rossville Blvd., Chattanooga, TN or to St. Jude Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
