Lynne Brock

Lynne Williams Brock passed away Monday morning, May 15, at Erlanger Hospital. Lynne was born in Chattanooga, to the late Clarence E. and Thelma Elizabeth McDaniel Williams and was predeceased by a brother, Jerry Williams. Lynne was an accomplished and multi-talented artist, working in several media including oils, acrylics, watercolors and clay. She also loved design in any form and especially enjoyed creating fabric art, building pieces made from rare woods, and designing and supervising the construction of metal sculptures. Her talent in interior design was obvious in her homes and she was very generous in sharing her eye for design with her friends. Lynne’s special area of expertise was conceptual art and her vivid imagination, combined with her amazing talent, produced many remarkable pieces of art, each telling its own story. Her work was created for her own enjoyment and love of art, but she generously gifted her family and friends with her work. She also found joy in looking at and buying the work or other artists, especially those just starting their careers. Lynne was a graduate of Central High School and received her Bachelor’s Degree at The University of Chattanooga in Home Economics, and later earned a Master’s Degree in Conceptual Art from the Pratt Institute in New York City. During her time there as a student she developed a love of the city that she indulged at every opportunity throughout the remainder of her life. After earning her advanced degree, Lynne taught at both UTC and at Chattanooga State. She loved teaching, but she loved traveling more. She retired from teaching to become an inveterate traveler, going to the well-known places as well as the out-of-the-way places around the world. She enjoyed the vastness of Australia just as much as she enjoyed the villas of Italy, the cathedrals of Great Britain or the onion domes of Russia. She always enjoyed learning about the people and their lives in every place she visited and, when possible, interacted with the citizenry to familiarize herself with their customs and habits. In the course of her travels, she visited many countries and learned about many cultures. Lynne loved her children and grandchildren very much and especially enjoyed shopping with and for her grandchildren. Her family was very precious to her and she enjoyed those family occasions like Thanksgiving when she could gather everyone at her home for a large dinner and celebration. Lynne also enjoyed her church family and was a longtime active member of New Hope Presbyterian Church and she greatly enjoyed her involvement there. Lynne is survived by her seven children, Beth Brock, Ben Brock (Carolyn), Walter Brock, Jennifer Turner (Marlin), D. W. Brock (Melissa), Melissa Adcock (Dustin), Krystal Parker (Lloyd); and her grandchildren, Garrison Brock, Pierce Brock, Austin Chandler, Katie Ridley, Haven Lee Giannunzio, Taylor Lynne Brock, Ashley Grace Brock, Hannah Adcock, Daniel Adcock, Jacob Parker, Sarahbeth Parker, James Parker and Chris Parker and by her dear friend and longtime companion, Gary Ridge; and close friends, Judy Smith and Elaine Sullivan. Those wishing to honor Lynne’s memory may make a donation in her name to the Erlanger Heart and Lung Institute, the Children’s Home Chambliss Shelter, or One Ball One Goal Foundation (1270 Market Street, Chattanooga, Tenn., 37402). It was Lynne’s wish that her body be donated to science in the hope that the study of her mechanical heart valves could provide information to help others with a similar condition in the future. A celebration of life for family and friends is planned for Saturday, May 20, 2017, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. Lynne was greatly loved by her family and friends and she will be greatly missed.
