Minister J.C. Watkins, 85, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017. J.C. is a son of the late Jack & Sadie Watkins and was also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Beatrice Ann Watkins, sisters, Ina Mae Hanley, and Delores Hemmer, granddaughter, Kristen Thurman and son-in-law, Randall Cody. J.C. was a graduate of Tyner High School then left Chattanooga for his military career in the U.S. Air Force in 1950. J.C. served the Air Force in Japan during the Korean War and served in the Vietnam War. The following U.S. Air Force bases J.C. served Sonderstrum Air Force base in Greenland ; McDill AFB, Tampa, Fla.; Charleston AFB, Charleston, S.C.; Danang AFB, Vietnam; Barksdale AFB, Bossier City, La.; Anderson AFB, Guam; Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio; Offutt AFB, Bellevue, Neb. During his military career J.C. preached for many Churches of Christ as needed. filling in for their regular ministers. While in Vietnam, J.C. worked at the church and orphanage in Danang. He became very close with two of the girls in the orphanage and wanted to bring them back to the U.S. to become part of his family. He often worried and wondered what became of those wonderful children and ministers of that church in Vietnam. On July 1, 1976 CMSGT James C. Watkins retired from the Air Force after serving 24 years. He moved his family back to his hometown of Chattanooga where he began his full-time ministry. During his ministry J.C. served as full time minister to Cohutta Road Church of Christ, Ringgold, Ga.; White Oak Church of Christ, Chattanooga, Edgewood Church of Christ, Greenville, S.C. and Cowan Church of Christ, Cowan, Tenn. He was the Narrator for Know Your Bible program for many years. Survivors include his three daughters, Carol (Rick) Ellis, Ringgold; Cheryl (George) Plemons and Joy Thurman, both of Chattanooga; brother, Gary Watkins, Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Barbra (Paul) Weathers, Granite City, Ill.; Edith (Bob) McDaniel, Ypsilanti, Mich.; Geneva (Ron) Medlock, Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Brent Plemons, Kevin Plemons, Tabitha Williams, Randi Green, Ashley Ellis, Josh Thurman and Emily Ellis; ten great grandchildren, Cody, Lily, Eli, EJ, Garrett, John, Kingston, Kathryn, River and Tyler. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017 in the funeral home chapel with Ministers Rick Owens and Charles Cochran officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
