Richard Wendell Brewer, (Dick), 86, died on March 9, 2018. Born May 17, 1931, he was the youngest of eight children, (one girl, seven boys: Stan, Edna, Myles, George, Herbert, Allan, Warren and Richard). Dick graduated from Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga., where he served on the Honor Council and as a class and literary club officer, sang in the chorus, and played basketball. He also had the incredible good fortune to meet Katharine "Keiko" Lane. They married after graduation and he enlisted in the Navy, leading them to Coronado, Calif., where Mark and Dawna were born. His service included posts in Florida with the Navy, from which Dick was Honorably Discharged to pursue careers that included teaching High School English, and eventually insurance. Dick's insurance career led to Tennessee, where his sons, Marshall and Gordon, were born. The family settled on Signal Mountain in 1966, where they remained until moving to Nashville in 2013. In retirement, Dick tutored at Normal Park Elementary, welcomed visitors to the Chattanooga Visitors' Center, wrestled crossword puzzles, devoured any newspaper's sports page that came his way, listened to classical music, wrote Haiku poems, read widely, (Robert Frost and Frederick Buechner remained favorites), and battled Keiko in a daily game of Scrabble, (she won the series, 2,438 games to 2,417). Many of his favorite memories were of friendships he and Keiko made through Second Presbyterian Church in Downtown Chattanooga, where the community will hold a Memorial Celebration as part of the regular service on Sunday, June 10, 2018.
