Ethelwyn Arnold

Ethelwyn Marie Sylar Arnold, 99, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018. She was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. Mrs. Arnold was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She served as Director of Christian Education at Brainerd United Methodist and later Director of the Kindergarten at the church. She was very involved in youth groups at the church. Mrs. Arnold had a ravenous love for reading. She loved to feed the birds and take rides through Chickamauga Battlefield spotting the deer. In her younger days she was active in sports and served on the PTA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Wright Arnold; parents, Bert Lee and Eola May Jolley Sylar; two brothers, Jay Norman Sylar and Robert Houston Sylar. Survivors include three children, Timothy Jay Arnold, Peter Lee Arnold and Wendy Elise Arnold; sister, Betty Stocker; one grandson, Lee (Elizabeth) Arnold and their children, Emmileigh and Bella; nieces and nephews, Mike (Diane), Susan, Sherry (Roxy) and Rocky (Aimee), Sammy, Mary Lou, Kathy, Mark, Keven, Micky; other family including Sandy Arnold, Nikki, Patrick and Tony. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Home Instead and Life Care of East Ridge who treated Mrs. Arnold like family. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Brainerd United Methodist Church in the Friendship Sunday School classroom with the Rev. Genevieve DeHoog officiating. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416. Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S.
