Peggy West

LaFAYETTE — Peggy Southerland West, 84, passed away at her home Wednesday – Feb. 13, 2019. She was born in LaFayette, Ga., to the late Ivan Vandell and Thelma Johnson Stephenson. She was a resident of Walker County most of her life. She served in Law Enforcement with the following Departments: LaFayette Police, Fort Oglethorpe Police both in Georgia, Miamisburg Police in Ohio and retired from Walker County Sheriff’s Department in 1999. She was of the Baptist faith and a former member of Woodstation and Walnut Grove Baptist Churches. She was very active in her community and was a member of The Optimist Club and several other charitable organizations in LaFayette. She worked hard in helping start The Family Crisis Center in LaFayette that serves the Walker, Dade, Catoosa and Chattooga Counties. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Lee Southerland, Carl West; brothers, Pat Dewey Stephenson, Ivan Vandell Stephenson, Jr.; foster daughter, Juanita Southerland Keith. She is survived by her son: Richard L. (Maureen) Southerland; grandsons, Phillip and Aaron Southerland, all of Lawrenceville, Ga.; stepchildren, Doug, Robert and Kathy West, all of Ohio; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturday morning after 11 a.m. until the funeral. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. – Saturday – Feb. 16, 2019, in the chapel. Burial will follow in McIntyre Cemetery – Rock Spring, Ga. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Family Crisis Center @ P.O. Box 252 – LaFayette, Ga 30728.
