Sid Wood

Sydney “Sid” Pearson Wood, 86, died July 11, 2019, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Sydney Hewitt Wood and Myra Pearson Wood; and sisters, Beverly Past and Peggy Napear. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Christine Forrester Wood; their daughters, Lisa Davis (Cary) and Leslie Tamashiro (Guy); grandsons, Ryan Davis and Tyler Davis (Christina); granddaughters, Sarah Davis, Annalyse Tamashiro, and Sydney Tamashiro; great-granddaughter Avienna Davis; sister-in-law Patricia Tatum (Earl); nieces and nephews, Amber Past, Mark Past, Stuart Napear, Grant Napear, Jane Napear, Judy Tatum, David Tatum, Greg Tatum, Paul Tatum, and their families; and caring helpers, Katherine Beasley and Sarah Lynn Sydney retired from Abbott Laboratories, after 25 years as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative. He distinguished himself by earning the number one spot in the Company’s Annual National Peer Ranking for two different years. Sid graduated from Chattanooga High School where he joined the Naval Reserves in his Junior year. His Reserve Unit was activated during the Korean War, soon after he began classes at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In the Navy, he served as a Naval Aviation Aircraft Crewman in Anti-Submarine Squadron VS 36, aboard aircraft carriers USS Monterey and USS Saipan. After his discharge from the Navy, he continued his education at the University of Chattanooga. He was a charter member of the East Ridge Sertoma Club, and a Past President of the Pee Wee Football League. He was a long-time member of the Chattanooga Model Boat Club. During that time, he built a number of remote controlled boats, as well as static models of sailing vessels. He built a beautiful ship for each member of his family. He developed an interest in working with copper and brass and built weather vanes of his own design, mostly in the form of sailing vessels. He was very active in judging and fundraising for Amateur Golden Gloves Boxing, both locally and nationally, and was a former Golden Gloves Boxer. As a former resident of Lakesite, he was actively involved in its incorporation as a city, and was elected one of the original three City Commissioners. The Family will receive friends and have a celebration of Sid’s life on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. with a Celebration of Life following at 2:30 p.m. If you wish, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or to a charity of your choice.
