William Seymour

William M. (Bill) Seymour, Jr. of Signal Mountain died on August 2, 2019. He was preceeded in death by his wife, Sandra Swafford Seymour. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. Before his retirement in 2002, he had a successful 40 year career as a Chemist and Technical Manager. He began his scientific career in 1962 on the Nuclear Research Staff of The University of Tennessee at Oak Ridge. After completing a seven year assignment, he subsequently moved to private industry where he held a series of increasingly responsible technical positions with large corporations including Cutter Pharmaceutical, Velsicol Chemical, Tennol Biotechnology, Earth Tech, and Four Seasons Environmental Tech. Over the years, Bill held a number of important leadership positions with the Chattanooga chapter of the American Chemical Society, and was also active nationally as Secretary of the Tennessee ACS Government Affairs Committee. Bill also enjoyed several technical hobbies including astronomy, ham radio and aviation. He was the long-time secretary of The Barnard Astronomical Society at the UTC Jones Observatory. He held the advanced class amateur radio license KM4YL. He belonged to the Chattanooga Amateur Radio Club and the Mile Highlanders Radio Group. He was also an avid enthusiast of advanced computer flight simulators and participated in several radio controlled aircraft clubs. Bill is survived by son Greg (April) Seymour and grandchildren Autumn, Owen, Kibrom, Caedmon and Freya of Signal Mountain; and daughter Elizabeth Seymour and grandchildren Audrey an Wyatt Owen of Longmont, CO. Bill’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service at First-Centenary United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 5th at 11am. The family will receive visitors for one hour in the Narthex prior to the service.
