Billie “Bill” Jess Hammontree, a longtime resident of Chattanooga, passed away unexpectedly On May 17, 2020 at Erlanger Hospital. Bill was born on December 2, 1935 to Jess and Mary (Ryan) Hammontree and grew up in Greenback, TN, graduating from Greenback High School in 1954. He then served six years in the United States Air Force. Bill graduated from DeVRY Technical Institute in Chicago, IL and pursued a career in manufacturing with the 3M Corporation in South Carolina. He returned to Chattanooga for an opportunity with Modern Made Stove Company, and eventually became a manager at Lookout Property Management in Chattanooga, retiring in 2015. Bill married Polly Branch in May of 1957, and, unfortunately, Polly died in a tragic accident in 1968. In July, 1974, Bill married Sarah Ellen Cochran, who preceded him in death in November, 2018. Bill enjoyed playing golf with friends, and still played at age 84. He also enjoyed shooting pool with his friends at his independent living facility as well as poker. He is survived by his son, Richard F. Hammontree of Chattanooga, grandchildren, Jeanne Polly Hammontree Hargreaves of Portland, Oregon, and Andrew Jess Hammontree of Portland, Maine, great grandchildren, Acadia and Reed Hargreaves, and extended family, Kandyce Huggins and Chip and Cole Griffin. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held later in 2020 when larger gatherings can be held safely.
