Myra Steele

Myra Fuqua Steele, 68, loving wife and mother, has been called home by her Lord. She died peacefully in her sleep at home on September 30, 2020. She was born on June 24, 1952 in Chattanooga, TN. Myra graduated from City High School in Chattanooga. She then completed a nursing degree at the Baroness Erlanger School of Nursing in 1973. She went on to receive her BS in Psychology at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga in 1983. She spent her entire career of 34 years as a nurse at Erlanger Hospital. She was the head nurse of the Gynecology Unit at Baroness Erlanger from 1979 to 1992. She finished her career at Erlanger East Hospital working on the Postpartum Unit. Prior to that, she ran several of the Baby Fairs at Erlanger East. Myra was passionate about nursing and she trained many of the OB/GYN nurses working in Chattanooga today. She is much loved by her nurse and physician colleagues. Myra was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She loved to decorate, especially at Christmas time. She did the Christmas decorations at the church for many years. She also did much of the gardening for the church. She led the renovations of the church sanctuary and narthex several years ago. Myra was a member of the handbell choir and played piano/organ duets at times. In addition to decorating, Myra enjoyed playing tennis, playing the piano, music, reading, sewing and cross stitch. Myra enjoyed traveling, especially to the beach. She spent many weeks with her family at San Destin Beach, FL. Myra was married to her husband on September 28, 1991. She was preceded in death by her father, Homer Aaron Fuqua of Amarillo, TX and mother, Ruby Davis Fuqua of Chatsworth, GA; her dear aunt Myrtle Reilly of Chatsworth, GA. Myra is survived by her husband, Dr. Mark Alan Steele and her adopted children Austin Alexander (24) and Megan Leigh (21), her brother Donald Fuqua of Ennis, MT; and her cousins, Jeannette (John) Tipton of Delano, FL and Patricia Rogers (Scott) Painter of Dalton, GA. Visitation will be Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Belvoir Avenue from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Chris Sheets officiating.
