James Godfrey

Mr. James R. Godfrey, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, October 26, 2020.

He was born on May 16, 1927 in Cherokee County Alabama.

Mr. Godfrey served in the United States Army in the Pacific theater during the World War II era.

He worked at Lindale Mills in Rome, Georgia while attaining a Business degree. He began his professional career at Economy Auto in Rome, as Credit Manager. Mr. Godfrey worked for OTASCO for 34 years, as store manager at the Broad Street location in downtown Chattanooga, and was awarded Manager of the Year both in 1971 and 1979.

He also worked for Crye-Leike Realty in Chattanooga for 22 years.

Mr. Godfrey was a long-time member of the Hixson First Baptist Church, where he served in a variety of leadership roles. He was also a member of the Optimist Club of Chattanooga and was a Mason.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Betty Ruth (Tate) Godfrey, whom he met in Rome, Georgia. His parents, William Robert and Gertrude (Ellis) Godfrey, two sisters, Foye Godfrey, and Doris (Godfrey) Shaw, three brothers, Roland Godfrey, Leon Godfrey, and Gayle Godfrey.

Mr. Godfrey is survived by his daughter, Teresa Beth (Godfrey) Norman, and his son, J. Tate (Lourdes) Godfrey, one brother Theron Godfrey, and grandchildren Sara Beth (Norman) Lennon, and Benjamin Tate Norman, and great-grandson August Lennon.

Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM on Thursday, October 29, 2020, with Rev. Steve Granger officiating. Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Wednesday October 28, 2020.

Memorials may be made to the Hixson First Baptist Church, 5800 Grubb Road, Hixson, TN 37343.
