Walter Read Voigt, 72, died on September 11, 2020 in Birmingham. He was born on June 20th, 1949, in Chattanooga, TN. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and his MBA from Georgia State. For over 40 years, he worked as a financial planner. Read was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor for so many people. He was a man of God and shared his faith with everyone he encountered. His spiritual conversations were immense, bold, and powerful. He loved and accepted everyone and always placed others before himself. Read was a voracious reader and longtime fan of the Birmingham Barons. He adored the people and cuisine of the local restaurant scene and never met an art museum he didn't like. Embracing every opportunity to celebrate life, Read always sought to share joy with his family, friends, and strangers alike. He was predeceased by his mother Hilda Hude Chapin, his father William Winkler Voigt, and step-father Edward Young Chapin. Read is survived by his wife, Permelia Fry Voigt of Birmingham; daughters, Lucy Augusta Voigt (Gordon Gee) of Los Angeles and Ann Carlisle Voigt (Robert Anstey) of San Francisco; sister, Fifi (Robert) Johnson of Nashville; and their beloved dog, Ruffin. The Voigt family would like to thank all of the healthcare workers and friends who helped Read during his long battle with cancer. The family requests donations be made to The Lovelady Center (7916 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35206) or another local organization of your choice. A Toast to Read written by a dear friend - A kind and gentle soul who forged a path of peace and calm amidst a world sometimes filled with sharp and painful edges. His quiet voice and caring words smoothed the ground and felt like a deep, relaxing breath of clean air.
