Joyce Smith

Joyce Virginia Caldwell Smith, 76, succumbed to the ravages of COVID 19. She was initially admitted to Erlanger Hospital on July 19, 2021 after suffering a stroke at her home. After being transferred to Hospice of Chattanooga, she passed peacefully on August 13, 2021.

Joyce was born in Floyd county, Georgia in 1944. She graduated from Pepperell High School with highest honors. She attended the University of Georgia, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in English and later received an MA in American Literature. After much hard work, she received her PhD from Georgia State University in American Literature.

She taught at the University of Texas at El Paso and then the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she became a tenured professor of American Literature.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 55 years, Wayne H. Smith, her son Stephen Smith, her daughter Meredith Ogle, her granddaughter Bailey Ogle and her grandson Sean Ogle.

Services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Avenue, Chattanooga on September 05, 2021 at 3 pm. Burial in the Grace Memory Garden will follow the service. Masks will be required and being vaccinated is preferable.
