Clyde Vanoer

Clyde H. Vanoer, 92, passed away on May 15, 2021. Clyde was born on September 28, 1928 to the late Robert H. and Amanda C. Vanoer of Chattanooga, TN. He remained in Chattanooga except for the time he spent serving in the military. When Clyde was young, he was a member of the Boy Scouts, where he was a First Class Scout. Mr. Walter Keith was his scout master, and also his Sunday school teacher at Grace Methodist Church, where Clyde was saved at the age of fourteen. Grace Methodist Church, at the time, was located at the corner of Taylor and Ocoee St., across from Avondale Elementary School.

Clyde spent four years in the U.S. Navy, and twenty-six years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1975 as a Chief Master Sergeant. Clyde served in China, Japan, Korea, and France. His last overseas tour was in Vietnam, where he served as the First Sergeant of the Eighth Aerial Port Squadron. Clyde’s last tour of duty before his retirement was Superintendent of Recruiting in Raleigh, NC.

After serving in the military, he took a job as a realtor with Seeley and Associate’s Realty, and then later became a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in North Chattanooga for the next fifteen years.

Since 1958, for over 65 years, Clyde was a member in good standing with the Fidelity Masonic Lodge #558 F&AM in Harrison, TN.

He was also an avid golfer, and for many years was a member of Concord Gold Club in Chattanooga.

Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Amanda Vanoer; brothers, Earl, Carl, Ray, Bruce, Lee and Bert; sisters, Maude, May, and Blanch, and several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Lavada Hickman Vanoer, and son, Eric Steven Vanoer of Weeki Wachee, FL.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2021 from 5 - 8 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home @ Hwy 58. A graveside service will be held at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 2 p.m., where Clyde will be laid to rest with military honors.
