Elise Crates

Elise Anderson Crates, of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, passed this life peacefully for eternity with our Lord on Friday, October 8, 2021 at Erlanger Hospital, with care from Hospice of Chattanooga, one week prior to her eighty-eighth birthday.

A Chattanooga native, Elise graduated from Girls Preparatory School, and The University of Kentucky majoring in History and English. Subsequently she was on the Chattanooga staff of Braniff World Airways.

Her hobbies were all types of horticulture and green things, serving as president of the Signal Woods Garden Club and the Walden's Ridge Guild. Especially decorative flower arranging.

In 1960 she and Daniel Crates were married, for sixty-one years at the time of her death. Much of this period she traveled extensively with her husband as an executive with the world-wide family manufacturing and distribution business, Simco Leather Company and Crates Leather Company.

The Crates are members of the Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, for years regulars with the Brock Bible Class, Federal Judge William Carter leading.

Preceding her in death were parents, G. Frank and Helen M. Anderson, brother Jack M. Anderson and son in law Charles Matthews.

Surviving are husband, Daniel M. Crates; daughter Cameron C. Matthews; grandchildren, Tyler Smith and Eric Matthews; and great-grandchildren Rowan Smith and Isla Matthews.

Due to the extensive negative health conditions present by the Covid-19 virus, burial will be by private family grave-side services at Forrest Hills Cemetery, with Reverend Joseph Novenson of Lookout Presbyterian Church leading.
