Mable Cox

Ms. Mable Yvonne Cox, age 82, of Hixson, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2022. She was born May 18, 1939, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Shearlie Lee Friddell and Bessie “Big Moma” Irene Crowe Friddell.

Mable was raised Church of God in East Lake and was a devout believer and missed her calling to preach His word. She never missed an opportunity to share a bible verse, remind others to have a blessed day, and say their prayers. She knew the bible better than most and was known to have added a few verses of her own. However you look at it, she was certainly a child of God.

Mable was no stranger to hard work. She cleaned houses for years with her sisters Ruth and Pearl. She worked in daycare where she cared for dozens of children eventually caring for several out of her home. It’s no surprise that she watched after her two granddaughters, Alicia and Sarah, for many of their earliest years. Mable was in her element when she was holding a baby or chasing and playing with a toddler.

In addition to her parents, Mable was also preceded in death by her husband William Lee “Joe” Cox. She was the next-to-youngest of 12 children and has reunited with them all; hold tight because this is where all the nicknames come into the picture. Evelyn Louise, Lola Lee “Gyp”, James Deforrest “Ike”, Harry Victor “Watash”, Foster Parris, Pearl Kati, Eugene Edward, Franklyn Delano “Frank”, Vivian Ruth, Shearlie Dewayne “Wayne or Baldie”, and Mary Sue “Tootsie”. If you don’t recognize Mable Yvonne, it’s because she was also known as Sticks, Skinny, Boney, Von, and Tump. Stay tuned for more nicknames.

Mable was blessed with children of her own and was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Dewayne “Stevie” Cox, and survived by Melinda Sue “Becky” Potter (Jack), Tammy Daniel, and Jody Morris Cox (April). Mable was also survived by two beautiful granddaughters, Alicia Nicole DeFalco (Darin) and Sarah Rose Poole. Several cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive.

And, finally, it cannot go unmentioned that Mable loved dogs even though she protested each time a new one entered her life. She had an unknown number of chihuahuas and was rumored to have stolen (for her own good) a dog named Pepper. Eventually, Hannah came along and paved the way for four surviving grand-dogs, Adobe, Olive, Jolene, and Juni. Say what you want, but she never failed to pray for each and every one.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 19, 2022, from Noon to 2 PM at Lane Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 P.M. in the Coulter Chapel with Reverend Ronnie Smith officiating. A brief graveside service will follow at the Chattanooga Memorial Park, also known as the Duck Pond in Red Bank, Tennessee.

Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made in Mable’s memory to Hospice of Chattanooga or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
