Larry Hattley

Larry Ivan Hattley, age 88, passed away unexpectedly on May 12, 2022. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 4, 1933, to John Henry Hattley and Jessie Eleanor (Smith) McKenna.

Larry studied engineering (1952 graduate) at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina where he met the love of his life, Lillian. He later obtained a bachelor's degree (1968) from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Larry worked and retired after 40 years in the Water Quality Division of Chattanooga Tennessee Valley Authority.

Those who knew Larry well, knew he was a recovering alcoholic with 50 years of sobriety. He was humbled but very proud of that chip. He genuinely believed in the Alcoholics Anonymous program and spent a great deal of his life trying to help others find their way in the program and achieve their sobriety.

He was a former Sunday School teacher and longtime member of Hixson First Baptist Church.

For many years Larry was an avid traveler, never going the same way twice. In his later years, he enjoyed bird watching from his living room window.

Larry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His passion and integrity to those he loved was unwavering.

He leaves behind two daughters, Loretta Woodard, and Jackie Oettinger; Grandchildren, Jennifer Calhoon, Amanda Kilgore, and Wesley Oettinger; Great-Grandchildren, Evan Oettinger, Noah Calhoon, Emmaleigh Calhoon, Conner Freeman, and Julia Oettinger; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hattley and Eleanor (Smith) McKenna; his sister, Betty (Hattley) Stone, and his wife of 62 years, Lillian (McDevitt) Hattley.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 20, 2022, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022, from 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, with interment in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Hixson Serenity Club, 5695 Middle Valley Road, Hixson, TN 37343.
