Education Reporter Monique 'Mo' Brand joined the Times Free Press in July 2020. Before that, she covered city hall and crime in central Texas for the Killeen Daily Herald. She also worked as a reporter for the Kerrville Daily Times in Texas; a managing editor in Arizona, a broadcast sports anchor in Los Angeles and broadcast military correspondent in Norfolk, Virginia. The proud Army brat received her bachelor's degree in communications with a specialty in marketing at the University of Texas at Austin in 2008 and later received her master's in Journalism in 2014 at UT-Austin. She has a background in radio, broadcast and print. Her accolades include two Lone Star Emmys, a Rocky Mountain Emmy and several Texas Associated Press Managing Editors awards. In March 2020, she was won the Texas AP Star Investigative Report of the Year for her investigative work on the cost of growth. Monique has also been honored by the Texas Association of School Boards for her coverage of three Texas school districts and was honored by the Major James Kerr chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for her service as chief of staff for two U.S. Senators. Before her journalism career, she served active duty in the United States Navy and in the United States Marine Corps.
