Georgia to skip two-a-day drills

Georgia football players are scheduled to report July 30 and start preseason practice July 31.

The Bulldogs will work out every day in August with the exception of four Sundays and Picture Day, but they will not practice twice in a day. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Wednesday afternoon that this is the first time he can remember as a player or coach not having any two-a-day workouts.

"It's gone down every year, and that's good and bad," said Bobo, who quarterbacked the Bulldogs in 1994-97. "The good is you can teach a little better, but you might not get them as tough as you would like them. You don't have as many players, but everybody is playing with a limited number now.

"It is what it is, and I think we've got a good plan to practice this fall."

Jackson transferring

Redshirt sophomore tailback Dontavius Jackson has decided to transfer after the summer semester, Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt announced Wednesday night. Jackson played in four games last season, collecting four carries for 38 yards, but he was arrested last Saturday in Athens on six misdemeanor charges, including DUI.

Richt earlier this month had suspended Jackson for at least six games.

Gray to receiver

Redshirt junior Logan Gray, who considered leaving the program after being tabbed the No. 2 quarterback following spring practice, will begin preseason workouts at receiver. Gray requested the switch during a meeting with Richt, after which he announced he was staying in the program.

"Right now he's going to be working full-time at receiver," Bobo said. "We don't want to jerk the kid around and say, 'Hey, you're doing this on this day and that the next day.' We want to be fair to him and give him an opportunity to play that position."

Bobo admitted he would move Gray back if something happened to freshman starter Aaron Murray early in camp.

Williams loses house

Sophomore strong safety Shawn Williams lost his home in a fire Tuesday night in Damascus, Ga.

After consulting with the NCAA, Georgia's athletic association has established fund-raising efforts to assist in expenses necessary to replace the belongings lost in the blaze. Donations can be sent to a special account: Bank of Early, PO Box 527, Blakely, GA 39823, Attn: Andy Smith.

Williams played in all 13 games for the Bulldogs last season, tallying five tackles.
