Joyce Abston, of Red Bank, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was a native of Chattanooga and was a well-known seamstress and did alteration work for department stores. Private services were held Monday.

Ted Bedoit

Edward "Ted" Wrighton Bedoit, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010.

He was born March 14, 1916 to the late Edward J. and Natalie Wrighton Bedoit. An alumnus of Central High School, he served three years in the Army Air Corps as a pilot in World War II. He was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Ayer Bedoit.

Survivors include his sister, Natalie Bedoit Whorton, of Ooltewah; three nieces, Natalie (Jim) Brown, of Lakewood, Colo., Rebecca (Keith) Riggs, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Marcia (Jim) Fletcher, of Ooltewah; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Dana Lynn Broom officiating.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace.

Touré Brogden, 45, of Chattanooga passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, in Knoxville.

Ethel Davis

Ethel Betty Davis, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, in a local nursing facility.

She was a member of Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church before her illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Davis.

Survivors include her children, Linda (Romie) Crawford, Gary (Cheryl) Davis, Terry (Natasha) Davis, of Atlanta, Jacqueline Davis; sister, Sarah Carson; sister-in-law, Laura Harrison; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends; special friends and caregivers, Amanda Roberts and Shana Burney.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, March 5, 2010, in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. A.J. Bullard Sr. officiating.

Interment: Highland Memorial Gardens.

Goldie Durichek

Goldie Lucille Durichek, 96, passed to her rest on Monday, March 1, 2010.

She is survived by one sister, Florence Rogers, of Ames, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Peter Sr., two sisters and a brother.

She was a professional nurse in Chattanooga, Chicago and Madison and taught nursing education in Chattanooga, Loma Linda, Calif., and Weslaco, Texas.

Other survivors are sons, Peter Jr. and wife, Phyllis, of Cleburne, Texas, John and wife, Helen and James and wife, Martha, of Collegedale. Grandchildren are Donald Durichek, of Texarkana, Texas, Donna Walton of Burleson, Texas, Deborah Duerksen, of Lemon Grove, Calif., John Durichek Jr., of Fredericksburg, Va., Betty Farley, of Livermore, Calif., Esther Suggs, of Chickamauga, Ga., Jeffrey Durichek of Orlando, Fla., and Jonathan Durichek, of Collegedale; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Collegedale Memorial Park.

A Memorial service will be in the Gospel Chapel at Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sunday, March 7, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the building fund for the Collegedale Middle School or to Capital Projects at the Cleburne Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Nina Farren Evans, 83, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, March 1, 2010, in Mobile, Ala.

She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Evans, of Saraland, Ala.; daughters, Pat (Dewey) Gass, of Harrison and Dottie Hunt, Gainesville, Fla.; grandchildren, Lisa Ledford, Harrison, Susan (Mark) Leamon, of Harrison and Laura (Shamir) Shahi, of Washington, D.C.; great-grandchildren, Kirsten (Kevin) Phillips, Courtney Ledford, Jake Leamon, all of Harrison, Angela (David) Defriece, of Sale Creek and Alok Shahi, Washington, D.C.; great-great-grandchild, Dylan Defriece of Sale Creek.

Lee Roy Hart

Lee Roy "Sonny" Hart, 75, of Hixson, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at a local hospital.

He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He retired form Combustion Engineering as a welder and loved to work on small engines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Hart and Nancy Hart Newman; sister, Lou Clayton.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty Hart; sons, Ron (Sherry) Hart, Michael (Martha) Hart, Chuck Hart; daughter, Kimberley (David) Allen; brother, Arthur Hart; brother-in-law. Charles Everett Clayton; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Michael Combs Jr. officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Friendship Cemetery.

Howard Honeycutt Sr.

Howard W. Honeycutt Sr., 88, of Chattanooga went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 2, 2010. After a brief but courageous battle with cancer, he left this walk of life in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Howard was born on March 20, 1921 in Boone, N.C. and has been a resident of Chattanooga since 1967.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Edna Honeycutt; sister, Selenia McKenzie; and niece, Joan Lindsey.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 62 years, Marian (Huffines); son, Howard W. Honeycutt Jr., of Chattanooga; daughter, Sandy (Gary) Conner, of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Eric Conner and Dana (John) Owen, of Ooltewah; great grandchildren, Abbey and Jonas Conner, Kaylen and Kinsley Owen; sister-in-law, Shirley (Dennis) Linville and nephews, Terry and Frankie Linville of Brown Summit, NC; nephew, Robert Lindsey III of Chattanooga; niece, Christine Collins, of Lookout Mountain and several great-nieces and nephews.

Howard graduated from Cove Creek High School in 1939 and then attended Appalachian State University and The Citadel. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he was married and relocated to Greensboro, N.C., where he became the Electrical Inspector for Guilford County.

In 1949, he and his sister opened Howard Business College in Shelby, N.C. His career grew from there as he helped start a number of business colleges. Howard continued his career as vice president of McKenzie College until he retired in 1987.

Howard was an avid fisherman, a long time member of the Chattanooga Bass Club and also competed in several Pro Bass tournaments. In later years, he became a "fisher of men" as he followed the words of Jesus in Matthew 4:19, "Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men."

Howard, loved by many and often called "Mr. Honey" was a faithful member of Oakwood Baptist Church for 43 years, where he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. A love for his Lord, his church and prospective members was shown as he passionately served as Chairman of the Welcome Committee for several years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oakwood Baptist Church or Hospice of Chattanooga, to whom the family expresses grateful appreciation for the excellent and compassionate care provided during Howard's last days.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. today, March 4, 2010 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 5401 Highway 153 in Hixson.

Louis Land

Louis B. Land, 83, of Chattanooga, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, in his home in Red Bank.

He was a native and lifelong resident of the Red Bank area born to the late Claude Land and Stella Payne. Louis was a former employee with Norge Corporation, Wheland Foundry, Lockheed Martin Corporation and Roper Corporation.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mona Sue Land; and his brothers, Claude and Billy Land.

Louis is survived by his sisters, Maxine Land and Betty Campbell; son, Greg Land and his wife, Barbara, of Atlanta; two granddaughters, Jessie Land and Serenity Denmon; sister-in-law, Wanda Williams; brothers-in-law, Jimmy and Donald Chauncey, all of the Chattanooga area, and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to Dana and Abby at St. Barnabas, Brian Swann and especially David Packard. David displayed, to many, an unyielding diligence to his caretaking the last weeks of his life. And to all individuals who have supported and enriched Louis's life over the years.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, March 5, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Harvey officiating.

Sue Painter

Laura Sue Gaston Painter met with her Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.

Sue became a Christian when she was nine years old. She was a 1951 graduate of Etowah High School where she was a cheerleader. Sue was a member of New Salem Baptist Church where her husband Rev. Ted Painter served as pastor for 38 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James T. and Nell Gaston; and her siblings, James Taylor Gaston Jr., Margaret Brown, Sarah Sherrill, Bob Gaston and Durl Mart Gaston.

Sue is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Rev. Ted Painter and was very proud of her devoted family, which includes her daughter, Penny and three grandchildren, Ashton Daniel (Darrell) Pittman, Hunter Daniel and Laura Daniel; a special little girl, Lana Pittman, her great-granddaughter; and a lifetime friend, Katherine Harolson.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the North Chapel.

Services for Sue will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Alan Rogers, the Rev. Bill Freeney and the Rev. Charlie Robertson officiating.

Burial will follow in National Cemetery with Gary Brown, Mike Stiles, Royce Raines, Gregg Stiles, Tommy Burton and Ronnie Fisher serving as pallbearers.

Grover Petty

Grover C. Petty, 88, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010, in a local hospital.

Mr. Petty retired from Cavalier Corporation after more than 30 years of service. He was a life-long resident of Soddy-Daisy and was a member of Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church. Grover was a very special uncle and dear to his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Petty and Hester Morgan Petty; sisters, Helen Wright and Lucille Hodge; brothers, Montague Petty; Walter Reno, Tom Reno and Carl Reno.

Survivors include his nieces and nephews who were like his own children, Darlene and Jim Varner; George and Patty Wright; Don and Gayla Wright, Ron and Linda Wright.

Additional survivors are his sister, Louise Fuller Green; several other nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Lois Jones and Nancy Marquez.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Legacy Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Mike Young officiating.

Interment will follow in Coleman Cemetery with military honors. Soddy-Daisy Senior Neighbors will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Jane Reeder

Jane Beasley Reeder, 79, of Chattanooga, died Monday, March 1, 2010, in a local hospital.

A native of Florence, Ala., she was the daughter of the late William Marvin and Stella Beasley Reeder.

Jane earned a Bachelor of Science degree from East Tennessee State University in Music Education and a minor in Instrumental music. She earned a master of science degree from University of Tennessee Knoxville in Music Education and minors in Fine Arts (voice), Music Theory and Instrumental music. She also attended Birmingham Southern, University of Michigan, University of West Virginia, Oberlin Conservatory and UTC.

She taught orchestra and choir at West High School, Knoxville as well as choirs and started an orchestral program at both Red Bank and Ooltewah High Schools and developed a music department at Chattanooga State Community College where she taught for 20 years.

Jane sang four years with the Chattanooga Opera Association and played the role of Kate Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly. She has written a manuscript called Reeder's of the South and East, Vol.2 and is a certified genealogist having researched the Reeder, Harris, Abernathy, Hackworth, Dunbar, Harrison, Williams Jones, Smith, Booth, Beasley and Houston families.

She held memberships with Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity, Alpha Delta Kappa, Who's Who in American Education, Music Education National Conference, Delta Omicron Music Fraternity, Who's Who in South and Southeast, NDAR, National Band and Orchestra Association.

She is survived by several cousins.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Josh Rochester officiating.

Mona Sue Reno, 71, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, March 1, 2010.

Mona Sue was born in Soddy-Daisy, to the late Joe and Eva Manning Reno. She attended Ridgeview Baptist Church, retired from Chubb Life Insurance Co. from Actuarial and Credit Life Insurance Departments, and was employed as a leasing consultant at a local housing rental company.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Janice and Rollin Stapp, of Chickamauga, Ga., and Myrna and Mike Beck, of Savannah, Ga.; several great-nieces and nephews including, Robby (Jennifer) Mason, of Hixson, and Lori Bradshaw, of Ringgold, Ga.; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

Laura May Rose Wilson, 94, of Georgetown, Tenn., passed away Monday, March 1, 2010 at a local nursing home.

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, she was a former employee of Lovemans /Belk where she worked for 30 years, was a member of Central Baptist Church and a volunteer at Women's East Pavillion for 10 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Bill" William Wilson; parents, John and Stella Reed Rose; daughter, Treasa Wilson; and son, Billy Wilson.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Sherry and Doug Webb, of Georgetown, Tenn., and Nancy Wilson, of Chattanooga; daughter-in-law, Teena Wilson, of East Ridge; one brother, Waymond Rose, of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ken Hartley officiating.

Ruth Wright

Ruth Toliver Wright, loving mother and grandmother, passed into the Lord's hands on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in a local hospital.

Ruth was born in Dayton, Tenn., on Nov. 14, 1918 to the late Clarence and Katie Lee Toliver. She was an honor graduate of Rhea County High School and president of her graduating class at William Jennings Bryan College in Dayton. She worked for International Harvester in Chattanooga during World War II and Rhea County in her later years.

Ruth was a loving child of God, who maintained her faith in Jesus Christ and her love for her extended family and friends throughout her life. All who knew her will cherish forever her smile, charm and loving character. She was a wonderful and caring mother to her four sons and a loving and devoted wife to her late husband of 63 years, Frank P. Wright. Ruth made an instant impression on everyone she met with her sweet smile, gentle nature and sense of humor.

Ruth's brothers Ernest Toliver, William Toliver and Ralph Toliver preceded her into heaven.

She will be sadly missed by her surviving sons, Earl W. Wright II, of Knoxville, Robert (Linda) Wright, of Plant City, Fla., Frank Steven Wright, of Red Bank and Carlton E. (Lynn) Wright, of Hixson; her granddaughters, Amanda Wright, of Gainesville, Fla., and Kayleigh Wright, of Hixson; her sister, Shirley Sutton, of Daphne, Ala.; several nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws.

Dorothy Cate

CLEVELAND -- Dorothy Olivia Bradley Cate, 83, passed away Monday, March 1, 2010, at the family residence.

Mrs. Cate, who was lovingly referred to as "DeeDee" by her family, was a devoted wife, a caring mother, a loving and faithful friend, and a joy to all who knew her.

Mrs. Cate was a graduate of Chattanooga High School, received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chattanooga and was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She was a teacher at North Chattanooga Junior High School in the 1940s. She is a long time communicant of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and was a member of Cleveland-Athens Cotillion, Cherokee Garden Club, and the Symphony Guild. She also enjoyed weekly meetings with two local Bridge groups.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Clark Cate; one son, John Bradley Cate; and her parents, John Hoyt and Marian Bradley.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Clark and Sharon D. Cate; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth Cate and Eric L. Evans, all of Cleveland; one brother, Edwin Bradley Sr.; five grandchildren, Catherine Evans Wattenbarger and husband, Marc, Emily Evans, Amy Cate Tippens and husband, Kyle, Rachael Cate and John Patrick Cate; one great-grandson Caden Tippens; one unborn great-grandson, Baylor Tippens; one sister-in-law, Harrie Cate; one brother-in-law and wife, William "Buddy" Boyd and Joy Cate; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W.L. and Cora Mitchell; son, Donald Edward Fickey; and 13 sisters and brothers.

Survived by a daughter, Mary Gayle Oliver, LaFayette; son, James R. Fickey, LaFayette; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral from the Wallis Memorial Chapel Friday at 2 p.m. Service conducted by the Rev. Chris Oliver and the Rev. Kenneth Oliver.

Interment in LaFayette Cemetery.

ROSSVILLE -- Ella Jean Parton, 66, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010.

She was a native of Rising Fawn, Ga., and was preceded in death by her father, James Grady Henderson.

Survivors include her mother, Bessie Strickland, of Rossville; children, Deborah Tucker, Cartersville, Ga., Timothy Mealor, of Chattanooga, Belinda Allen, of Signal Mountain and Ricky (Stacy) Parton, of Ooltewah; son-in-law, Tim Allen; sisters, Faye Durham, Nina Hudgins, Sue Ramsey, Rosa Whitley and Martha Higdon; brother, Jay Henderson; grandchildren, Summer, Kerri, Chasity, Aaron, Michael, McKenzie, Wil, Skylar and Chloe; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Larry Miller officiating.

Burial will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Bruce Whaley

FORT OGLETHORPE -- Bruce Lamar "Roscoe" Whaley, 18, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010.

Bruce was a senior at Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School. He attended East Ridge Church of God and was active in the Special Olympics. Bruce was an avid racer, having participated in go-kart racing for many years. He was also an avid fan of all types of racing and the Florida Gators.

Survivors include his parents, Susie and John Alday, Tunnel Hill; grandparents, David and Bettye Whaley, Fort Oglethorpe, Barbara Alday, Tunnel Hill; sister, Tiffani Whaley, Fort Oglethorpe; special niece, Lilli Davis; stepbrothers, Payne and Phillip Alday; uncles, Larry Whaley, David D. (Debbie) Whaley, Stephen Whaley; and many cousins and friends.

MONTGOMERY -- Jacqueline Gass Hayes, formerly of Duluth, Ga., died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, after living with Alzheimer's disease for many years.

Mrs. Hayes faithfully served with her late husband, the Rev. Marion L. Hayes as a Home Missionary for the Southern Baptist Convention.

She is survived by her three children, Jeannine (Malcolm) Carmichael, Montgomery, Ala., Edie A. Hayes, Duluth, Ga. and Lamar (Sandra) Hayes, Woodstock, Ga.; her five grandchildren, Mary Jacque (Casey) Carroll, Birmingham, Ala., Emily (Ethan Babcock) Carmichael, Seattle, Wash., Ashley (Timmy) Halischak, Brittney Hayes and Caroline Hayes, all of Woodstock, Ga.; one great-grandson, Aiden Halischak.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.
