ObamaCare rationing confirmed

You may remember that during the long debate prior to the enactment of ObamaCare socialized medicine, Democrat leaders sharply rejected claims that ObamaCare would lead to government rationing of medical care.

Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said last August on ABC, "Let me just say, A, there's no rationing in any of these bills, so we don't have to worry about that."

And President Barack Obama himself said at a rally in Pennsylvania that the real culprits for the rationing of care were health insurance companies: "The insurance companies continue to ration health care. ... That's the status quo in America, and it's a status quo that's unsustainable."

But now that ObamaCare has passed, at least some of its supporters have become quite candid in admitting that government rationing is on the way.

Dr. Donald Berwick, a Harvard professor, has been nominated by President Obama to run Medicare and Medicaid. But Dr. Berwick has not been shy at all about saying that rationing will be the order of the day under ObamaCare.

In an interview in 2009 in the journal Biotechnology Healthcare, Dr. Berwick declared, "The decision is not whether or not we will ration care. The decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open."

In other words, Dr. Berwick does not mind rationing so long as it is government making the decisions about how that rationing takes place -- about who gets what care and who does not.

The disastrous results of socialized medicine in foreign nations such as Great Britain -- where government makes such decisions -- ought to raise serious concern about similar government rationing in the United States.

Call it rationing, call it careful delivery of health care, but thinking people know that unlimited health care for all is not possible. British health care works pretty well,so does Canadian and that in most of the developed world except the US.

The new US health care changes are imperfect and will be modified over and over, but it is a start.

Let's say you are a farmer feeding the livestock, there are four hogs at the trough and a calf nudges in to feed. The hogs go into a frenzy because they think they are being rationed, but the calf is happy because it found a needed meal. After a few moments all settle down and feed on a balanced diet.

This opinion column is just attempting to point out what every informed person pretty much already knew. Health care is already more or less "rationed" by insurance companies. The only difference now is a government bureaucrat is in charge of the rationing. Many people have some choice of what health insurance company to choose (even though there should be even more choice, which Obamacare does not address), but people can't choose their government.

nucanuck, I forgot about all those Americans running north to Canada for treatments they can't get in the US.

Reply: indian, since you have only the one goal in mind, that of getting rid of President Obama and are against everything he does, for solving all of "your" narrow minded problems, then how can you be an "honest broker" in any opinions you have?

May 5, 2010 at 9:47 a.m.

The first poster up there did it again, he lied. Britain is NOT okay with health rationing. Canada (the other half of me) is NOT okay in the health rationing arena. He lives in a small, very tiny corner of the country, in FairyLand. We've already established by his postings he does not and will not live in reality or accept the truth.

I love the way they lie and the multitude of ways there are to catch them in it. Even so, they deny it to the end. He says today: "but thinking people know that unlimited health care for all is not possible." Uh, excuse us, but some of US (conservatives only) have been saying and warning all along there will be rationing and worse. YOU geniuses have been denying it every which way but loose.

This is what Indian and many of us conservatives have been saying also: Obama and many Left-Prog/Marxist Dems have been changing stories faster than a rodeo clown changes pants. It's called LYING children. And it's WRONG.

We also will be proven right about all the other warnings regarding every one of these devious, nasty bills. The middle and working classes WILL be taxed into poverty, your children's children's children WILL be impoverished and probably completely enslaved to their Gov't, if they survive that is. It's called AGENDA and it's not nice and not compassionate. It's EVIL and anyone who follows it is the same. As well as very, very stupid.

I agree, but personal attacks (Obama and questions of citizenship) need to be eliminated for constructive argument. Even in the Declaration of Independence (as you mention), no personal attacks are made in arguments against King George III. Rather it only mentions the oppressive actions taken against the colonies to further solidify the move to absolve from Great Britain.

I don't agree with Obama, his administration, or the current Congress. I believe his policies are leading toward a European-style government that leans heavily on redistribution of wealth and reduction of personal liberties. However, I can attempt to defend those points without personal attacks. The founders derived their victory on the basis of truth given by the Creator, and 200+ years later the basis of truth still has not changed.

I'll leave the personal attacks to the far left.

May 5, 2010 at 10:25 a.m.

You're wrong on that point aces. Our Constitution allows for the criticism of our Government and its officials. That's part of what has kept America unique and America free. What the Left call "personal attack" is what they called "constructive criticism" 2 years ago-toward Bush. And Bush, knowing the Constitution, allowed them their disagreements with his administration.

In most other countries worldwide, including Britain and Canada now, it is frowned upon and even a chargeable offense in some cases to criticize, disagree and protest against the Government or its policies and its Officials. It's couched in clever legislation called "hate speech", exactly what Obama, Congress and Cronies are now accusing any protesters or criticizers (ie Tea Party) of against their Regime.

Comparing this Gov't and what's coming to a quasi-European "spread the wealth system" is moderate thinking at best, uncourageous to say the least. Spread the wealth agendas, systems and countries are Marxist and/or Communist, depending on how much the State owns and controls. They're all evil, plain and simple. They all take the booty for the Top Elites and starve the masses or hand out crumbs to them. They all go bankrupt eventually.

I assume from your posting you're a Christian. I suggest a wee bit more reading in the Prophets, how and why He spoke through them, the state of His people at the time (and now); coupled with a good reading of Jesus's (Yeshua's) warnings and admonitions against the evil Leaders and hypocrites of His day. We have to obey them and pay our taxes. We are NEVER supposed to sit back and allow Evil to take control and run its course in our societies. And those who disagree, criticize and fight back, always, throughout History bring the full wrath of their Leaders and their Minions on their backs. Including the ancient Prophets, including the first Jewish Believers who just preached the Gospel in the Land. They continued to state His Truths and commandments to all in their societies. And they were tortured and killed for saying so. To this day.

But that was/is the difference between the True Believers and the false ones. The Liars and the Truth-sayers. The winnowed-from-the harvest and the cowards, left behind. These are 'those' days. Stand up and speak out or lie down and die like a coward, that's our choice, always has been, always will be.

nurseforjustice- based on the name I assume your profession is or was a nurse. If so, have you ever been one of the volunteers for the RAM projects where doctors, nurses and other medical folks volunteer their time to to see uninsured patients? These RAM camps are about the only hope for some who often wait hours in line to get a fraction of the medical care available to most of us with employer or govt subsidized health insurance.

No EaTn, I have never been a part of that. But believe me, I work for a county hospital who sees everyone, whether they have insurance or not. Even if they have no ability to pay at all they also get seen the same as others. It is called indigent care.

I have also been on that side as a patient's father and was very greatful for it.

I think one point the article is trying to make that no one has mentioned is that once again, Obama Company lied. They said there would be no rationing. Yet, a month after the bill is passed, we already here them talking about rationing.

EaTn, your analogy is apt: The pigs you refer to were already living of the dole of the farmer who requires them to do nothing but be there... so that he can fatten them up, slaughter them, then have his bacon. With the progression of Socialism that we are seeing, we will be just like those pigs. Happy as can be as long as we get the hand outs, until our time is up as determined by big government.

I work for my meal. I do not, nor will I ever expect it to be handed to me.

I would rather not be compared to any animals in that context, unless you refer to Animal Farm. I think many need to reread that.

I am all for open and free criticism of the government and it's officials, but criticism should not be confused with personal attacks. Criticism implies there is a logical progression of facts to reach a conclusion with little to no subjective views interjected into the argument. Personal attacks are often anchored in non-character based subjective viewpoints and often driven by emotion rather than rational thought.

Wrong again aces: Not one person on the face of the earth is "objective" or completely logical and right. There's plenty though who THINK they are. Some are more passionate than others and some get "personal". So what? The main objective should be to tell the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth. Hiding behind fear of public censure just doesn't cut it amigo. Worrying about 'offending' some sounds like the predilection of the Grand Progressive mindset. Watch it, it's endemic throughout the Culture.

canary, I think you may be confused with the message I am trying to convey, so I am going to attempt frame it a little better. I agree with you on just about all aspects.

The only point I am trying to make is the ability make an argument. When a child asks why they must clean their room, the parent's response of "Because I said so" never stick as well as the parent's actual reason(s) for wanting the room clean. Knowing the truth is not the same as communicating the truth. Communication using logic is what defines any thought process to reach a conclusion. The usage of parables by Christ is an excellent example.

You're right, not one person can use logic in a completely objective manner. However, the ability to use logic is a God-given gift, and the very basis of logic is derived from God. The study of Christian Apologetics is a great example. "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis is another great example. It's not about being politically correct or softening the speech. It's about painting a picture that points to a particular foundation of Truth.

Trust me, I am not worried about offending anyone.

Aces: good, logical points, I get what you are saying.

"Mere Christianity" is good, I've read it many times, yet it is not THE definitive reading on logic vs. passion either. Nor is it the definitive truth on God's Word. God's Word is. Take the prophets of old. The ones Adonai used as His 'trumpets' or human shofars to the stiff-necked Hebrew Nation. They were a motley, righteous crew of rough men, schooled (in Hebrew Scripture) and unschooled men, humble men, poor men and stubborn men. Lots of differences, lots of personalities and quirks. But one thing united them. Their Obedience to Adonai and to Him alone. And their willingness to finally get up and speak His Truth. That takes guts and courage, passion and persistence and yes, maybe a little 'logic' was in the soup somewhere. All that, of Him.

The universe and all in it has been created in the most scientific, logical, non-chaotic, mathematical way, with absolute perfection and precision. Then there's the human (mind and soul), totally different story when it comes to our ways. Yet he uses us, illogical and passionate, logical and precise.

There is no one way to be. There's only Truth and the rest is gravy. I love to paint, but not everyone appreciates or 'feels' the Art. I love music. Yet not everyone 'hears' the melody I do. Some need the softness of a piece of velvet and some need the harsh 'blast' of a shofar. Ultimately, it is never you nor I who "convince" anyone of anything. It is the election of whom He elects that is the final word-we know "by Spirit and by Truth".

Hal: Obama has done nothing but berate BP and go back to playing golf. More political theater, yawn...

Bush, being the Fed Rep, had to stay "out of the way" for a brief time until the State and local authorities acted. That's the Law in case you're not aware. Just living in a state that was a constant disaster 'zone', I learned that quickly. Unfortuantely, for the Katrina victims, their state and local reps/mayor did bupkus for them. Funny how the Media, Hollywood celebrities, Oprah and the Left forgot to mention THAT.

You're a liar or an idiot. British health care is a DISASTER, people are waiting months for MRI's and dental appointments, and Canada isn't much better, thats why the Premier of New Brunswick (NewFoundland?) came to the U.S. for heart surgery on his own dime (as do THOUSANDS of Canadians every year (because he would have waited months otherwise.
