Campfire started Lookout Mountain blaze, officials say

The Georgia Forestry Commission ruled today that a forest fire that burned 148 acres on Lookout Mountain was started by a campfire.

Firefighters with the Walker County Fire Department and the forestry commission began battling the fire about 3 p.m. Sunday, said Steve Blackwell, the ranger in charge of the Walker County Forestry Commission. When the fire spread to the forest, the commission took over and spent the next two days containing the fire, Blackwell said.

The fire was finally contained Tuesday afternoon, he said. Safety workers were able to protect one house and three communication towers from suffering any damage, he said.

State officials investigated the scene and determined that the blaze started from a small campfire about three feet in diameter at the top of Lookout Mountain, Blackwell said.

Officials don't know who started the campfire, he said.
