Gilmer boosts security for KKK rally Saturday

by Adam Crisp

The Gilmer County Courthouse steps in Ellijay, Ga., will be the site of a two-hour Ku Klux Klan rally on Sept. 11, an event that has drawn sharp criticism from the Georgia NAACP.

“The fact that this rally is taking place on the anniversary of the bombing of the World Trade Center is reflective of the lack of sensitivity that exists within this organization,” said Edward DuBose, Georgia NAACP president.

Who: Knight Riders of the Ku Klux Klan

When: Noon-2 p.m. Saturday

Where: Gilmer County Courthouse, 1 Broad St., Ellijay, Ga.

He called holding the rally on the anniversary of the attacks “an act of terrorism from an organization that is no stranger to terrorist attacks as demonstrated throughout its history.”

Dozens of law enforcement personnel will provide crowd control for the rally, and the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office has called on assistance from the Ellijay Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol.

“Our desire is that they come and go without any type of situation occurring,” said Gilmer County Lt. Frank Copeland, who has been assigned to coordinate security. “We will be there to protect county property and to protect any citizens that may be there. That’s our job.”

This is at least the second time the Klan has held a courthouse rally in Ellijay. The last such event, in 2006, drew about 30 Klansmen and spectators, Copeland estimated.

Gregg Wolf, who identified himself by e-mail as a grand dragon of the KKK, declined an interview with the Times Free Press but confirmed there would be a rally. He wouldn’t say how many people might attend.

The Knight Riders of the Ku Klux Klan lists an Ellijay address as a regional headquarters.

DuBose called on local leaders to denounce the rally.

County Commission Chairman Mark Chastain said the event was not necessarily welcome in town, but the Klan’s right to assemble is protected free speech.

“We Gilmer Countians are peaceful Americans,” Chastain said by e-mail. “We did not ask for this event to be held here. We don’t approve of racism and hope that the KKK’s demonstration is a nonevent. We, however, hold dear the First Amendment and respect the rights of all to peacefully assemble.”

The NAACP had no plans Thursday to stage a counter rally in Ellijay, but Lt. Copeland said if anti-Klan protesters attended the event, deputies would keep them and Klansmen separate to avoid any physical confrontations.

In recent years, Ellijay, a town of about 1,500 with mountain vistas, a good apple crop and picture-perfect town square, has promoted itself as a peaceful weekend getaway.

“I don’t think you should label a community because something like this happens,” Copeland said. “It can happen anywhere. ... This is a safe community with a lot of friendly people ... and everyone is welcome. That’s the thing.”

Saddens my heart that a slime-ball organization like this still exists in the USA. Anyone who gives these moronic clowns any time or attention at all is a fool for playing into their hands. They should be totally ignored. My daughter mentioned something about going there to maybe protest their rally and I advised her not to even glance at the fools if she must pass by that way. The best thing folks could do is totally avoid the square that day. So I say please, if you do not endorse this organization, don't look at them, don't take a picture, don't even acknowledge their existence. Thank you.

I agree, it's a dam shame that a racist group like the NAACP is allowed to exist at all.

Enuf I do not think you can compare the NAACP to the KKK. While you may not agree with the NAACP's agenda or ideals, they do not have a history of violence. The KKK is a terrorist organization that has lost much of it's bite, but we should never forget the reign of terror they instituted after the civil war and during the 20th century in the South.

George has the right idea. Ignore these fools. While I support the right of any American to say whatever they want, that doesn't mean I have to pay attention to them. The KKK should be ignored just like that fool "pastor" in Florida. If you don't pay attention to them, they lose their power.

You may not be able to compare the NAACP to the KKK that is your opinion, but the NAACP is a racist crybaby forum for anything they don't like, even if it doesn't make one bit of sense. I don't recall them telling their own kind not to riot in LA or not to steal in New Orleans.

Don't worry the Black Muslims will most likely be on the other side of the event having a counter protest about them having the rally in that county in the 1st place.

I have notice that the KKK has rally's in places where they have some member's in the seats of power and position.

This is about the only way this is allowed and to tell you the God's honest truth it will continue to happen unless we remove the bigots in high positions with the clout and the money.

No Marie the Klan was a club where people got together to spook the hell out of the negro's in the town that was the main reason for the forming of it in the 1st place during that time.

Then Nathain Bedford Forrest changed it into a secret society and leaned it in a racist direction.

"If you want to be free, there is but one way; it is to guarantee an equally full measure of liberty to all your neighbors. There is no other." by Benjamin Franklin in the Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.

Yes we are disgusted by what these people have to say but if we don't protect the lowest scumbags right to free speach then we all lose it. Here is another excellent quote.

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it." by Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826), to Archibald Stuart, 1791

As long as they are peaceful, leave them alone and pay no attention.

Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson would probably have a big problem with the KKK assembling in Ellijay... because they represent the exact opposite of those quotes... just like the English did in the Revolutionary War.

And trust me, we have enough sense not to mess with the KKK or pay any attention to it tomorrow.

I just want to say that I've lived in Ellijay for about five years now, and I am horrified that this event is occurring. One of our civic organizations which I am a member of had a ceremony planned on 9/11 to honor firemen, poilice, and vets and we had to cancel the event because of this! It was a slap in the face to us.

I sit on the board of many organizations here, and I may go just to see if I can recgonize anyone's shoes poking out from underneath those robes.

The bad thing is, the Annual March for Alzheimer's is the same day, and will circle around the square by the courthouse. And, using my dark sense of humor (because that's the only way I can deal with this), I just hope none of them wander off and get caught up in the wrong crowd!

Since I've been here, this is the second time the KKK has rallied. So, you know the powers-that-be not only allow it, but probably encourage it.

And yes, people have the right to freedom of speech. I agree with that, so I am going to exercise mine right now!

Our media is now being controlled by the government as to what we know and what we don't know, so, really, what's the point? When I want to know what's REALLY happening in America, I go to another country's NEWS site and find out there. Did you know that Obama just pumped 18 BILLION dollars into Iraq to create jobs because they have a high unemployment rate?

But, he's gonna create jobs here, too. He's going to build up our own infrastructure by fixing up runways, railways, and highways! That's great... if you're a man! What about the women? We make up over 50% of the workforce. Some of us are single mothers, disabled, and chose to work instead of go on disability to give our children a good role model. Do you want a woman in a wheelchair out pouring asphalt on a road? Give me a break!

In my opinion, Ellijay is a town of Good 'Ole Boy politics that will never die. The people here elect people into office because of who their "people" are. There are NO educated people in office in this town. I don't expect it to change, and as soon as my daughter graduates high school, we're outta here.

Vent finished.

As a Black person I will say I don't like it when I have to go through. It's not a safe place. Like many towns in GA, the white folks make it a mean place.

The klan is what it is: a racist, terroristic collection of ignorant, toothless, cigarette-smoking, beer-swilling, shirtless-shoeless ne'er-do-wells who love to hate because they know nothing else. In Gilmer County and Ellijay, unfortunately, this is the profile of many people - though not all - in the general population. It’s unfortunate that civic leaders, church goers and others in Ellijay who ought to know better let this happen in their community. And on 9/11 at that. Vacationers and tourists to the county should note the unfortunate gathering and stay away from this backward little county and town, and their upcoming Apple Festival.

First of all, who in 2010 still wants to join the Klan? This is seriously some sort of time-warp misfit bunch.

Secondly, as a biracial woman, I am no fan of the NAACP at times, but they have never incensed hate. Also, they were VERY vocal about the rioting and looting that occurred in Los Angles, during the Rodney King verdict. It was vehemently denounced by the organization. To destroy your own neighborhood is just stupid, but we all know that.

This event is not only embarrassing to the residents of Gilmer County, but embarrassing to to South itself. My family moved to Atlanta, when I was 15 from New Jersey. Never in my life did I hear of, or see mess like this. If I lived in Gilmer, there is no way that I could just sit back and allow this event to take place in my community especially on a day as sacred as September 11th. It's things like this that make my decision to move to California next fall simple. The only way to end hatred and breed acceptance, to confront the ugliness head on and fight it.

The Klan exits in 2010....just damn.

September 11, 2010 at 11:32 a.m.

Clynnp: our sympathies with you and yours. I wouldn't want to live with that either, yet while you're there, speaking out and educating those who will listen is always a good thing. I grew up in a very south, southern town, in a 'white' family who was ostracized, (my brother beaten at school), threatened and our home vandalized because my parents had Black friends, some who came to our home with their children to play with us kids. Our neighbors wouldn't allow their kids to play with us. The Lord was with us though, down the street the KKK burned crosses on other white's lawns and did worse, for what sins I do not know.

(BTW, many KKK in history, which many leave out of their comments, were/are Democrats. The favored lie today is that all Republicans are evil racists). The schools became integrated but nothing much changed. I remember Black girls in my gym class were frightened to death when they were forced to come to our school. I comforted them and talked to them, my brother did the same with the boys but got beaten almost every day-by the little white boys who were taught to hate. We were saddened to see all this. Eventually we moved from that place and today, it is a huge city with lots of drugs, crime, drive-by shootings and...racial chaos. As is Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, etc.

Blinkie, I wish I could wish you 'luck' but I don't believe in chance. California is where I learned (again) that racism surely rears its ugly head, just when one believes we have all gotten over it. And it has many heads, like Medusa of old. In states like CA, it is the Hispanics and the Blacks who hate, kill and rampage for the most part. If you, like some members of my family, have darker than pale skin, you will be more accepted. If you are rich of any color, well, you can always live in protected, gated communities and don't have to mingle with the unwashed masses such as the rest of us are.

September 11, 2010 at 1:17 p.m.

Even among the churches, many are deeply segregated in CA, and many want it that way-of all races and ethnic groups, sadly enough. Here, back in the South, it seems better in some ways, worse in others. I, as a White person and others I speak with too, have been treated badly by Blacks in TN/GA and area. Even when we reach out and attend their churches, events, etc. Many are learning Black Liberation theology (social/economic "justice"-NOT Jesus' truth) in their pews, and the fuel of hatred is passed on to the next generation. Oddly enough, all over this country, I have spoken with much older Black folks in their nineties and 100's, some who went through horribly, racist times and events. They really suffered. Most of them have a different attitude, they realize alot of the mistakes and sins of the past. They are more compassionate and ask for our prayers, they are dear, dear saints as far as I'm concerned.

You do need to get up to speed with reality and your research. There are indeed many racists, bigots, population control freaks (like John Holdren, the atheist in Obama's Administration); Margaret Sanger, the atheist Progressive-Left (read Democrat) founder of Planned Parenthood, whose writings about killing off the "Negro" through abortion is "a good and necessary thing for society" are kept from the masses in America; homosexual haters of heterosexuals (they call us "Breeders", with disdain) and generally a motley crew of activist, white-hating groups around the country. Today they are fuelled in their hate and anger by the likes of the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Charles Rangel, Al Sharpton and the Black Muslim Brotherhood. Violence is definitely incited, encouraged and occurs even at the voting polls around the country by these groups and individuals.

Obama's White House passed down the edict to Eric Holder (Attorney General, Dept of Justice) and his minions to NOT charge Blacks when crimes are committed against Whites. This was backed up recently by a number of attorneys in the AG's Office who were ordered not to bring charges against the New Black Panther Party-one of many, they were shocked at this flagrant, hypocritical disregard for our laws.

Bottom line, we don't want the KKK, they are dying off and will face the Judgement Seat shortly. So, do you, like many others sanction the racism against whites for centuries of slavery, hatred and killings? Will that 'justified' hatred towards whites cure your people's own hatred and racism? Is it not extremely hypocritical and if you are a Christian, against His commands to "Go out into the ALL the nations and preach the Gospel..". He brings all His children into unity with Himself, in the Body. That's a deep and wonderful place to be in Him. It's one thing to "speak out" and speak the Truth. It's another to sanction hatred and/or murder of any group of human beings while demanding compassion and understanding for your own.

This is one of my postings from a couple of months ago:

The Constitution and our Founders

It's interesting to note, in light of the various 'interpretations' of our noble documents over the years and of the slow seeping away of our inalienable rights and freedoms, that for twenty to thirty years after the signing of these documents, Americans, black and white, slave and free were more united than what we see today.

Women voted in 1796 (in Washington DC and Virginia ). We had Black Legislators, Officers and Veterans in the US Army, who received pensions and notable mention in various newspaper obituaries lauding their esteemed service. They were respected by our Leaders (like George Washington, Ben Franklin, John Adams, etc) and buried side by side with their White comrades ( 1770's-early 1830's). That all changed and became divisive when Lincoln stepped in and emancipated slaves.

After the Civil War, many southern Legislatures removed the portraits of the Black Founders, men and women, and the Black Officers who served in the Army and hid them under stairwells and in the backrooms of the Capitol buildings. They are never mentioned in modern history books by the Progressive-Left in academia who 'revised' the original writings.

What has also been whitewashed from today's history's books, is the fact that many of the Leaders of this country (White men and women-see Abigail Adams, etc.) also denounced slavery and pointed to the Constitution and to our Creator as evidence as to why it should be abolished. If not for the war between the North and the South, slavery would have been no more, long before emancipation occurred.

Blacks have been taught that Woodrow Wilson was the "father of the Democratic Party and 'freed' blacks from their servitude and inequality. In fact, he was an avid racist, Progressive and Population Control advocate-especially for the minority population, which he considered 'dispensable'.

September 11, 2010 at 1:50 p.m.

Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood was also a Progressive (read: today's Democrat-Leftist) and an Eugenicist, a la Nazi Germany's Third Reich which hated Blacks and other minorities, including Jews, believing them "an inferior race...who would produce nothing.." For years until this day, the highest amount of abortions occurr within the Black community, their babies killed at an unprecedented rate in History.

History has been rewritten, which hearkens to the point of not only securing our rights to bear arms, but more importantly, to secure our full and complete rights as citizens of this country, beholden to no King or Tyrant and that we, the people hire our Officials, not the other way around. We have the right and supposed freedom to know the truth-all of it, and to teach it to our children.

Source of the FNC show on the History of our Black Founding Fathers and Mothers, and of numerous townhall meetings with Black Americans of all political/religious and non-religious beliefs: Glenn Beck, the one Prog-Leftists love to hate and the only one in the Media so far, brave enough to tackle these difficult subjects in the true spirit of unity in America; Numerous authors and books on our Founders, white and black, are available online and at bookstores, written by a plethora of writers and investigative journalists, interested in finding out the truth of our history. Because in knowing who we were, that will help define who and what we are today. And where we are going. We are not a 'global' goo. We are Americans.

(BTW, many KKK in history, which many leave out of their comments, were/are Democrats. The favored lie today is that all Republicans are evil racists)

It's the Southern Strategy. Republicans are no longer the party of Lincoln, they went after the Southern White Vote, and so changed who they are.

If your history isn't teaching you about the change, that's a problem. Catch up with the times, in 1948 the first racists in the Southern Democrats left in a spat over a civil rights plank in the party platform, and the Civil Rights Acts finally got the white South over its hatred of Lincoln. Then Reagan sealed the deal, with Newt Gingrich taking up the banner in the 90s.

And I wonder what other things you've been missing.

Ok, you missed that it was under Bush when the charges were ordered to be dropped. I don't know that Obama didn't tell them to do it, but if the Attorneys in the DOJ listened, they should be tried for misconduct.

Also the people you're talking about? Admit they have no firsthand knowledge of any such edict.

Blacks have been taught that Woodrow Wilson was the "father of the Democratic Party and 'freed' blacks from their servitude and inequality. In fact, he was an avid racist, Progressive and Population Control advocate-especially for the minority population, which he considered 'dispensable'.

Never heard of anybody teaching that Woodrow Wilson was the father of anything. The closest reference I found was him referring to Thomas Jefferson in that way.

I think you really just need better history books.

I'd worry more about the racist naacp. than the KKK. People say the Klan has always been to bash the negros but that is not true the Klan has always helped "THE PEOPLE!" For generations you beat your wife or your kids black or white you can call on the Klan to PROTECT YOU, they are not as racist as you nut jobs say. As a matter of fact what was the rally about on Saturday? Some stupid black group has to put their 2 cents worth in to make it about the negros, and in actuallity it was about LATINO's did you hear that black folks????? The latino's have invaded Ellijay in there most profitable time taking money away from the the generation of families that have picked apples to help support their families to have it handed over to a bunch of welfare stealing, continous babymakers that PAY NO TAXES because if they did pay taxes all the ten's of Mexican families that live together could not get help. They are stealing jobs from our families. I have NEVER understood why we can have a segregated black college, and college scholarships for BLACKS only but you let us try to have something for just the "WHITE AMERICANS" and we have to get the NAACP involved heck the NAACP will probably start something for all the Latinos.... The only difference is we know the WHITE'S & LATINO'S DO WORK where as and listen closely people "MOST BLACK's" are to lazy to work. More and more everyday our families are loosing jobs because a latino will work for nothing because they don't care they get ALL sorts of goverment assistance,(they don't worry about the money they send it all back to Mexico) and they have to pay white folks and blacks more to do a job. You "BLACK FOLKS" should be upset about that. The WHITES are a minority in this world now, because blacks and latinos just keep on having babies to get MORE & MORE welfare money, medicaid, & food stamps. When is the last time you went to a large supermarket chain with our one buggy of groceries and cash in our hands, and have 3 buggies overloaded and 4 or 5 latinos swiping them food stamp cards. Think about. I am all for the Klan at least they are equal opportunist even if all you haters believe it or not.

To the Dogfight person that stated: "The Klan is what is: a racist, terroristic collection of ignorant, toothless, cigarette-smoking, beer-swilling, shirtless-shoeless ne'er-do-wells who love to hate because they know nothing else. Klansman are NOT TERROIST, get a clue read a newspaper or watch the news.. Most Klansman are very wealthy because they work and do have all their teeth do not drink or smoke and are very educated people and certainly are not shirtless or shoeless unless they want to be because they are "WORKING", they are NOT ne'er-do-wells who love to hate because they know nothing else. (Unlike you most likely)They do not hate they PROTECTour families and way of life because of scumbags like you and the NAACP & Latinos. You were probably sitting with a beer as you typed that comment smoking your cigarette pulling crap out of your grill, which is probably holding YOUR teeth in. Most of you haters, are or you know someone in a gang that has killed people invaded their homes look at the news it is not the KLAN doing that it quick call the NAACP for protection it is BLACKS or LATINOS, they may ever ONCE in a while be some white person get involved but I assure you they were strongly mislead by the biggest hate group in America, NAACP. All the many different races we have in this world they are good and evil in each one.

I don't think those folks need protection, they need to be put in jail.

They may treat all races the same, but damn who protects men who beat their wife and children? Not men who are accused, but by your words, ones who do.

That's terrible.

Or did you misspeak?
