The Welcome Mat

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

As a teenager, before joining the U.S. Army, I worked in stove factories, chair factories, and carpet mills. These same industries are flooded with illegal aliens doing the same jobs I use to do. Why are these jobs being touted as work "Americans are not willing to do"? ... Industry Big Wigs do not mind this vast labor pool because these people are easy to suppress and, in turn, wages and benefits have trended downward.

What's the plan? Are we going to deport all of these millions of illegal workers? Will American workers suddenly become "willing" to do these jobs for the same suppressed wages with no benefits. Are companies "willing" to cut into share holder profits in order to provide a living wage and group health insurance for an American work force to replace these illegal aliens? Not going to happen. No how, no way. Democrats and Republicans are equally complicit in this conundrum. This entire issue has created some strange bed fellows, indeed.

Ahhh, that would be because bennett is a bum and needs to hear how much he sucks so he might take the opportunity to improve his work. He is a progressive propaganda robot that takes all of his ideas directly from the democrat (ic) party and the left wing press.

Back when he had Republicans in power, making the news, his work was much better because he felt free to rightly criticize the party in power. There was plenty of material to work with and it seemed he could focus on a clever delivery and did not have to struggle in the search for material.

Since his party has come to power and has begun driving the news he has a hard time finding material because he refuses to criticize his own party. He has become a cheerleader, not a thinker, much like his supporters on these pages.

Notice that people like Jon Stewart have been able to stay relevant with the democrats in charge. This is because he can see that the democrats supply oceans full of good material and he is not afraid to take advantage.

I am only trying to help bennett improve. Lord knows someone needs to help him see his weaknesses. The bennett worshipers will automatically commend bennett for mediocre work every day and leave him with the impression he is doing a good job.

Up until now, he has ignored my advice so I have to keep beating my drum in the hope I can rescue him from his own mental mediocrity.

Texas governor Rick Perry announced last week his state will start holding undocumented migrant workers in dog cages while courts decide their status. Arizona’s Jan Brewer plans to use giant cannons that will shoot anyone with skin darker than a saltine cracker back across the border to Mexico.

In an effort to calm Hispanics fears about Texas and Arizona’s new immigration policies, President Obama, while speaking in El Paso, mentioned possible comprehensive immigration reform legislation that would allow illegal immigrants hiding…..er…residing in the U.S. longer than five years to stay. Those who have been here between two and five years would be asked nicely to leave, so they could return to pick beans and lettuce. And immigrants here less than two years will be right back with your dinner.

@ BRP, it’s called political satire. He makes fun of the left and right. Unfortunately, it’s been more of the right due to their extremely glossed birther/tea-party rhetoric. Think about it...the right has Donald Trump as their pitch man now?? I try my best to be bi-partisan/independent, however, the Becks, Trumps and Limbaughs have high-jacked the Republican Party which has made them irrelevant. The millions of people who follow these clowns underscore why they are fair game to be made fun of...hence is the reason why Bennett does it. You can't educate Bennett based on your own clandestine agenda to cover the atrocities of your right wing views. You can, however, look at what he's doing as slapping the face of the machine we call the government. The prosecution rests.

Yes, I do commend his work. Clay Bennett is a fine cartoonist. He is in company with some of the best in the country. As is Michael Ramirez and Chuck Asay (conservative), Ted Rall and Mr Fish (eviscerate Democrats consistently), Tom Toles (my personal favorite) and of course Gary Trudeau.

So you don’t like his political slant. That’s your right. But there is no getting around Clay’s talent. Mediocre it is not. As a matter of fact, one of his older cartoons is one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s a security vs. privacy theme.

With a thoughtful cartoon about a non-partisan national issue, most of the commentary is redirected toward the cartoonist.

Does polarization trump substance on this board? It would seem so.

A nation of immigrants should be able to discuss immigrants in all forms and flavors. I wonder how native Americans felt about the "whiting" of America by the undocumented European hordes that "ruined" their country.

Maybe we are all one people and borders are just political constructs that hinder mankind's natural development. Does our color blend really matter? Does our language mix really matter?

Are there any grown-up thoughts out there?

Hmmmm . . . Why do you - along with so many of your fellow Republicans - emphasize the “mexican/illegal aliens” who enter the U.S. through Texas in your rants, but say nothing about the thousands and thousands of Cuban “illegal entrants” entering the U.S. through Texas? For this particular “illegal entrant” nationality, the Texas-Mexico border appears to be an open door:

“Since the mid-1990s. . . Many Cuban immigrants departed from the southern and western coasts of Cuba and arrived at the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico; many landed on Isla Mujeres. From there Cuban immigrants traveled to the Texas-Mexico border and found asylum. . . The term "dusty foot" refers to Cubans immigrating to the U.S. through Mexico. In 2005 the Department of Homeland Security had abandoned the approach of detaining every dry foot Cuban who crosses through Texas and began a policy allowing most Cubans to obtain immediate parole.”

Wikipedia Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_Am...

And, indeed, if you are so concerned about the amount of tax payers dollars allegedly going to “illegal entrants,” why do say nothing about the fact that it is the Cuban “illegal entrant” groups who are automatically eligible to receive public financial assistance, Medicare, scholarships, business loans etc – not the Mexicans - and that it has been this way for the past 45 years:

“In order to provide aid to recently arrived Cuban immigrants, the United States Congress passed the Cuban Adjustment Act in 1966. The Cuban Refugee Program provided more than $1.3 billion of direct financial assistance. They also were eligible for public assistance, Medicare, free English courses, scholarships, and low-interest college loans. Some banks even pioneered loans for exiles who did not have collateral or credit but received help in getting a business loan. These loans enabled many Cuban Americans to secure funds and start up their own businesses. With their Cuban-owned businesses and low cost of living, Miami, Florida and Union City, New Jersey (dubbed "Little Havana-on-the Hudson")[10] were the preferred destinations for many immigrants and soon became the main centers for Cuban American culture.”

All kidding aside, Clay’s welcome mat illustrates our immigration perceptions. It is neither pro- left nor right. On the one hand, too tough a law is seen as racist; on the other, too little intervention is seen as not protecting our national borders. The reality is, we are really just concerned about one border, the one between the U.S. and Mexico. The northern border with Canada hardly receives any attention, though it is almost three times as long. Thus illustrating it is not the border itself that creates a problem but its being crossed illegally. Yea I know - duh!

There are only two approaches I can think of to ending people coming here illegally,

1.Protect the boarders to prevent illegal entry.

2.Remove the reason people enter illegally.

The first approach requires building a national barricade and patrolling the border, much like the East Germans and the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. The image of our borders dominated by Cold War style “Checkpoint Charlies” is not the image I particularly like, though that is quickly becoming the norm. What's next, border states with neighborhood checkpoints for everyone's documents? In other words, welcome to the Police States of America.

The second approach requires us to understanding why people enter the United States illegally. While there are many reasons, one dominates all others – work. The media inflames fear and promotes prejudiced beliefs while minimizing employment as the motive. Thus there is no political upside in addressing work as the true motive and faces many downsides. One of the biggest downsides to working in the United States illegally is that it provides a cheap labor force for employers. Taking that labor force away will drive wage costs up in employment areas like farming and food processing plants, which employ people here illegally on an industrial scale. Still, this is exactly what needs to be addressed, and does not require the extreme measures of making “Fort America” out of our home.

One man in his fifties that I see every year works long hours in the heat from Spring through the Fall (for very low wages), sends most of his money home to his wife, children, and parents-in-law, and longs for the end of the season when he can be home again. He is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. They are often treated as something less than servants, yet many of our businesses could not survive without them (and the businesses KNOW it).

Obviously no country can afford to just throw open its borders. However, we need to realize that this is a very complex problem. We need to address it in a way that makes sense for our economy, for business, and also remember all the while that we are dealing with families here, not hardened criminals. I think that there are some politicians on both sides of the aisle that are trying to do just that.

BRP,

You may, indeed, "be confused". The flow of Hispanic immigration has turned negative with more leaving the US than coming. Might the US pass Mexico on the way down? The reverse flow would indicate that some workers may be anticipating growing opportunities to the south.

Liberal this - liberal that - liberal - liberal - liberal. I challenge you to think outside of the neo-conic box you've sealed yourself into and become open minded and free of your self-inflicted tyranny. It's borderline insanity. Liberals are not the reason for unemployment, gas prices, illegal immigration, wars, etc... You make baseless posts and quite frankly your words are empty. You remind me of an amped up Sean Hannity. If you want to debate the facts I’m all for it, but don’t post extreme biased propaganda. This isn’t Fox News.

See what you leftists have done to this country? obama has screwed things up so bad that Mexico is a better place to live than the US and all of the immigrants are going home. Thanks a lot!

Wait, If that is true, why did obama find it necessary to speak on immigration policy? Is he trying to find a way to facillitate the flood of Mexicans back into Mexico?

No Canary they are not criminals deserving of death but criminals nonetheless. And if we (conservatives) are ALL Black and White as you say, then you (Libs) ALL have no absolutes. I have lived in a border town for 8 yrs and it ain't all fun and games with families just looking for work. It is where a host of drug deals are done by illegals along with rape and murder. And yes I know business men who probably could not do business without them, which is what makes it so complex as you and I both have stated. I do not believe the end justifies the means. I don't know how long it has been since you have been here to Chatt. but our Hispanic population is booming. Now before any of you start saying that I am prejudiced you need to realize that I have 2 Hispanic siblings that I love dearly. I have always been accepting of any race that is here legally and enthralled with their stories.

because the issue, morons, is mexican illegal aliens...that's the problem on our southern border.. they are mexican..what should i call them, swedish? nearly 100% of illegal aliens entering our country illegally our southern border are mexicans......you lefties can spin it all you want and label anyone who points out the fact that they're mexican as racists, but then again reality is not your strong suit and causes you a problem. it's the same thing with extremist, muslim terrorists....we're not allowed to point out that they're muslim or from the middle east...we're supposed to keep up the fantasy that they could be anyone.

obama is shamelessly attmepting to gain favor with latinos by kissing up to mexican illegal aliens.

anyone who comes into this country illegally is a criminal...no matter what race or nationality.. but the fact is...mexicans are the ones pouring through our borders....that's the issue at hand.

and mountainlaurel.....it's typical of leftists like you to label anyone who doesn't agree with you or points out facts as racists or bigots.

there are two problems...what to do with the illegal aliens in this country now..and how to better stop them from coming in/defending our borders ....

the most important job of the federal government is to protect its citizens...that means defend our borders. it's not being done.

this issue has nothing to do with race..it's a matter of national security....

while janet napalitano is instructing her army of perverts to pat down little girls and babies...our borders are like swiss cheese and obama is making speeches putting putting down our citizens so he can get a few rounds of applause from mexican illegal aliens..

that's right, mountain laurel.....MEXICAN illegal aliens........and extremist MUSLIM MIDDLE EASTERN MEN.

you lefties would always prefer to stick your heads up your collective asses rather than deal with facts....

it's not a civil rights issue, it's not a racial issue, it's not an immigration issue.....it's a national security issue, it's a crime issue and it's priority because u.s. citizens are being victimized.

bennett's cartoon is disgusting in it's attempt to confuse the issue......everyone is welcome here. but you have to come in the right way...simple as that...mexican, italian, german, south african, indian, mongolian....should i go on?

if you find it racist, mountainlaurel, it's because you're a moron.

The only time that I have a problem with any group is when they try to force their narrow ideology (fundamentalist Christian, fundamentalist Muslim,.. you name it) on everyone else. Some cultures that lived "a more primitive lifestyle" honored values that we have unfortunately cast aside for short-sightedness and greed. It's a shame that we seem so unwilling to think that we might be able to learn from others.

I think someone needs a timeout.

Actually, I think this cartoon is very insightful. Mexican illegal aliens are an important part of our economy - for better or worse - and making high but not insurmountable barriers ensures that we get more motivated ones. They provide necessary unskilled labor at low cost. That enriches everyone except American citizens who would normally do unskilled labor.

Option #1 Continue to let illegal aliens work in America. Sub-Option A - Continue to turn a blind eye. Business as usual. Sub-Option B - Document and work-visas as G.W. Bush and Obama have both proposed, but could not pass due to lobbyists for various business interests.

Option #2 Enforce laws and deny work to illegal aliens. Raise the artificially depressed wages for unskilled labor to reflect an American living wage instead of a Mexican living wage.

The problem is, sound-bite thinkers want to do the first part of option #2, but not the second. It can't work that way.

"Can I pray to my God at the beginning of a highschool football game..."

--- It is my understanding that the concept of a "personal god" means that you have a 'direct line' to that god and no intermediary is necessary. Correct me if I am wrong on this. That would mean that you could pray privately anytime and anywhere that you wish, no one needs to 'lead' you in prayer. Is your faith so shaky that you cannot attend to this on your own?

Personally, I don't care where and when you pray, as long as I am not compelled in any way to be part of it (or to pay for it) and as long as you are willing to give that same right to anyone else who has a different concept of god and/or worship than you do. How do you feel about including a Muslim, Buddhist, Wiccan, or Pagan prayer at those ball games? After all, freedom of religion means freedom for ALL religions.

A blue bird made a nest in the mailbox and the mailman agreed to leaving the mail in a contraption i fixed up. These things make me happy, and i assume, IMMIGRANTS as well.

The reason a bird made a nest in the mailbox, is some kid, took a bat to it, and i don't think it was a Immigrant.

Up the road a ways, we have a Slate Quarry "Rock" and the Mexicans work bundleling this beautiful slate into wire and onto pallets. Its Hard Labor and i'm sure it goes to build beautiful houses and patios for the well to do. I admire these people and they should be appreciated and have the Right to the American Dream, they deserve it.

On my grandmothers farm when I was growing up there was migrant workers who came in every year and helped her bring in her crops. They were the hardest workers I ever saw.Unfortunately those times are past. There was no scare of terrorists blowing up a city or trains or just killing a bunch of people just for the hell of it.There is a major threat to our country now and it needs to be addressed.Part of that address is that we need to know who is coming into our country.I don't really care about the illegals that are already here, thats a done deal, but we need to get a grasp on our very porous border(s).

Southeners get real!!! No terrorist will ever come to the south and blow himself up in some creepy town there, except they crash accidently on their way from NY to LA. THe south is fly-over-land for them...

this threat only exists in your paranoid dreams..

I always found it kind a surreal that the people living in the dangerous cities, NY, CHicago, Frisco, LA, Seattle, voted for Democrats but those in the "saveheavens" of the south and midwest were drawn into fear-mongering by GOP-morons and they fell for no reason...

We brag about being a land of laws. We have laws regarding immigration. We should quit jaw boning it to death and either enforce them or change them? Any law that can't be enforced or that is ignored should not be a law. People come here for one of two reasons the primary one is to work so employers have a big role in how well the laws are enforced. The other is to distribute drugs or be a part of some other criminal activity.

If you don't think a_in_a is the most intelligent person posting on this site be assured you no one can match his intellect or insight into any region of any country in the world, just ask him if you don't believe me.

It is too bad all of us can't be so well educated we irritate people so much they only tolerate us and can't possibly like us but that is the price one has to pay for being brilliant. I hope the country can recover from those ten people returning to Europe. It may not be as harmful as the 937 wealthy families moving out of America last year for financial reasons, to protect their wealth. The latter cost us more tax revenue than the exiting Europeans. I am not smart enough to understand why people move from their own country to another then get all upset because the country to which they moved isn't like the one they left. Enlighten me a_in_a how did anyone as intelligent and perceptive as you got duped into moving to some forsaken farmers college for conservative idiots in Alabama? I am sure only a master con artist could do that to you. Should you return try the great Granola state. Better ditch the dollar and bonds if you accumulated any while here, we are going to inflate our way out of debt and that is not good for either of them.

If we are going to model Europe we better adopt similar tax rates which includes a VAT tax in addition to high rates on all income. I have no objection to doing so as long as we stop increasing our debt. I would also support legalizing drugs then regulate and tax them, legalize prostitution then regulate and tax it, legalize gambling then regulate and tax it in addition to establishing a national lottery. Making these activities illegal works about as well as prohibition did which did not work but made a lot of crooks very wealthy.

Colorado, ah yes. Absolutely [insert deity of choice]'s country up there. Definitely has a unique beauty. I remember "snow" from Dayton, Ohio...and the San Gabriels. And I was in Los Angeles both times it snowed there -- 50-odd years apart. Closed all roads in and out of the valley...couple-three inches.

Last time I went through Colorado was something like 50 years ago...pre-Interstate, anyway. Drove up through Rabbit Ears the old-fashioned way...via the switchback up the face of the mountain west of Denver. It was a June crossing. My '58 Pontiac didn't like the long climb and the thin air [nor did I] and I had to pull over about 3/4 of the way up. The closest I have come to that 6 or 8,000 foot high view was at Bridal Veil Falls about 3,000 feet straight down to the Yosemite Valley floor.

Also greatly enjoyed the drive west through Grand Junction. [Sure glad to see my ocean in SoCal a day or so later, though. Living out there these days is out of the question but "Surf's Up!" memories burn bright.]

We have a great number of those kinds of roads here in Eastern Tennessee...except ours only climb maybe a thousand feet or so up the face of the bluffs [used to climb that high on foot in SoCal many, many years ago.]

The Great Smoky Mtns here are packed with outstanding motorcycling roads...springtime with the Dogwoods in bloom is breathtaking.

But I digress.

Rolando,

I lived in Tennessee for about ten years. As breath-takingly beautiful as it is here, it still isn't the Smokies. I miss creek-banks thick with moss and ferns. When I close my eyes and visualize paradise, the Smokies is what I see. I remember hiking (part of) the AT to Mt. LeConte and staying at the cabins at the top; I wonder if they are still there.

My time in Tennessee started my lifelong love affair with mountains; I just don't feel right when I'm away from them for very long. It's similar to how you felt about the ocean. I suppose now, however, I would also have a hard time leaving the snow.

Speaking of which.... It looks like we will get a total of about 16 inches by morning. That would be great in the winter when it is light and fluffy, but now it means heavy, wet, back-breaking stuff. Ugh!

BTW, how are those lovely dogwoods coping with the disease/parasite/fungus or whatever has been attacking them in recent years? Losing them would be a tragedy.

Hate to tell you, Canarysong, but almost all of the dogwoods are gone. Over the last few summers the wooly white adelgid has wrought havoc. As it turns out, these prodigious devils are now found in the trunks of every indigenous hardwood in the Southeast. The waste produced in the consumption of these native trees has been declared a Level 7 airborne toxin and there are actually "no-go" zones in certain parts of the Smoky Mountains. This development would mean tragedy for all of the old growth forests in Tennessee if it were true.

Yes, I'm lying. I know, you weren't even talking to me. I saw some lives for sale at Walmart...I think I'll go get one.

that was cold dude!Actually the fungus thats been killing dogwoods is still around but mostly kills at higher altitudes. Some areas are hit harder than others but there are still beautiful areas left.I only know this because my family planted one in memory of our father and I wanted to know how to take care of it.

" I would also support legalizing drugs then regulate and tax them, legalize prostitution then regulate and tax it, legalize gambling then regulate and tax it in addition to establishing a national lottery."

I actually did not see this coming, but I totally agree with you on that point. This would indeed be a smart move, which would solve several problems at a time.

Just convince the evangelics ...

By the way, my colleagues leaving leaving the country, were not living the south.. mostly northeast or west coast.. they did not even live in Jesus land, but still preferred going back..

"...your only warning will be an odd rustling of feathers..."

It is amazing how a few words brings up an old, old memory of exactly such a sound I heard while walking home one evening along the edge of a bluff on an Alaskan island. It only lasted maybe five seconds.

A faint sh-h-ushing sound from behind and a majestic eagle cruised along, level with the bluff and riding the updraft. The sound of the wind passing through her feathers was heart-stoppingly awesome. She cruised out of sight without moving a feather. Couldn't have been more than 10-15 feet away at closest with a wingspan of about 6-7 feet. [Probably a "she" due to size.]

They shoot bald eagles hereabouts. Several have been brought down.

SeaMonkey said: “Nearly 100% of illegal aliens entering our country illegally our southern border are mexicans......you lefties can spin it all you want and label anyone who points out the fact that they're mexican as racists, but then again reality is not your strong suit,”

Believe it is you who is “spinning” and appears to be having some trouble answering a legitimate “reality” question involving our current “wishy-washy” immigration policies, SeaMonkey. Since Cubans and Mexicans are both Hispanic the question can hardly be considered a racist matter as you suggest in your rant.

I suspect your reluctance to discuss this particular immigration issue is due to plain old Republican Tea Party politics along with a favored wealthy Cuban constituency in Miami. Indeed, like it or not, illegal Cuban immigrants have been flocking to the Texas border since the mid-1990s. In 2007, for example, about 11,500 Cubans came into the U.S. at the Texas border. Unlike the illegal immigrants from other Latin/Central American countries such as El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, the Cuban immigrants were not deported and qualified automatically to receive for government aid due to our “wishy-washy” immigration politics.

Clearly, there is an urgent need to reform U.S. immigration policies. I’m just hoping there are enough sane politicians in Washington D.C. who can develop something more constructive than a silly wall where the Republican Tea Party types can dress up and play soldier along the Texas, Arizona, California and Mexico borders.

You know as well as I do the bible oters are not going to be convinced by the logic. Too many Americans think morals can be legislaed including many of our legislators.

My wonderment is what enticed you and the others to move to the U.S.?
