President Obama's policies have harmed Chattanooga enough

President Obama,

Welcome to Chattanooga, one of hundreds of cities throughout this great nation struggling to succeed in spite of your foolish policies that limit job creation, stifle economic growth and suffocate the entrepreneurial spirit.

Forgive us if you are not greeted with the same level of Southern hospitality that our area usually bestows on its distinguished guests. You see, we understand you are in town to share your umpteenth different job creation plan during your time in office. If it works as well as your other job creation programs, then thanks, but no thanks. We’d prefer you keep it to yourself.

That’s because your jobs creation plans so far have included a ridiculous government spending spree and punitive tax increase on job creators that were passed, as well as a minimum wage increase that, thankfully, was not. Economists — and regular folks with a basic understanding of math — understand that these are three of the most damaging policies imaginable when a country is mired in unemployment and starving for job growth.

Even though 64 percent of Chattanooga respondents said they would rather you hadn’t chosen to visit our fair city, according to a survey on the Times Free Press website, it’s probably good that you’re here. It will give you an opportunity to see the failure of your most comprehensive jobs plan to date, the disastrous stimulus scheme, up close and personal.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 helped fund the Gig to Nowhere project, a $552 million socialist-style experiment in government-owned Internet, cable and phone services orchestrated by EPB — Chattanooga’s government-owned electric monopoly.

• • •

The Gig to Nowhere is a Smart Grid, a high tech local electricity infrastructure intended to improve energy efficiency and reduce power outages. After lobbying for, and receiving, $111.6 million in stimulus money from your administration, EPB decided to build a souped-up version of the Smart Grid with fiber optics rather than more cost-effective wireless technology. This decision was supposed to allow EPB to provide the fastest Internet service in the Western Hemisphere, a gigabit-per-second Internet speed that would send tech companies and web entrepreneurs stampeding to Chattanooga in droves.

In reality, though, the gig, like most of the projects funded by your stimulus plan, has been an absolute bust.

While the Smart Grid will cost taxpayers and local electric customers well over a half-billion dollars when all is said and done, there has been little improvement in the quality of EPB’s electric service. Worse, despite being heavily subsidized, EPB’s government-owned Internet, cable and telephone outfit that competes head-to-head against private companies like AT&T and Comcast is barely staying afloat, often relying on loans from electric service reserve funds to afford its business expenses.

Further, there has been no credible evidence to suggest that EPB can even provide a gig of service consistently and reliably. Any companies hoping to utilize the Gig to Nowhere are quoted monthly billing costs that make the service unfeasible. As a result, Chattanooga has remained a relative ghost town for technological innovation. Almost no economic development whatsoever has resulted from the gig.

• • •

What the gig has brought, however, is that shocking price tag. Because of your unwillingness to balance the budget, Mr. President, the $111.6 million federal handout to subsidize the Gig to Nowhere will actually cost federal taxpayers $158.2 million, due to interest. Once EPB received the stimulus infusion to fund the pork project, the electric monopoly took out a $219.8 bond that will balloon to $391.3 million by the time Chattanoogans are done paying it off.

The bond’s first payment comes due this fall and there remain significant questions about how EPB can manage to pay the debt without hiking electric rates on EPB customers.

Building a Smart Grid to get into a telecom sector already well-served by private companies was a bad idea from the start. But getting government involved in places it doesn’t belong is a hallmark of your administration. As a result, you and your policymakers were happy to fund the Gig to Nowhere.

You claimed that the Smart Grid would create jobs for Chattanooga. But in reality, all it did was push America deeper in debt and lure a local government agency into making a terrible financial decision that will weigh on Chattanoogans like a millstone for decades to come.

So excuse us, Mr. President, for our lack of enthusiasm for your new jobs program. Here in Chattanooga we’re still reeling from your old one.

The embarrassing vitrol of the editorial writers reveals their own sad character. I believe the expression is "stewing in your own bile."

What makes it so ironic (and the writers so hypocritical) is that this same paper today notes the top 5 employers in Hamilton County (at least 19,000 employees) are either government agencies or hospitals/insurance companies who will see their bottom line increase with Obamacare. So much for free enterprise, kill Obamacare and small government...

It is hard to resist, but to laugh at the FP editors would be unkind to them.

All Republiecons have ever done for this country is gave tax breaks to the rich and plunged this country and nearly the entire world into the greatest recession since the great depression. So you take this article and SHOVE IT. RIP GOP!

Amazon takes the Pilot tax abatements and provides the lowest quality jobs. Friends returning from military deeded it the worst quality employment they have ever had.

Take that job and shove it, Pres. Obama. Now, you want to give them more tax cuts so the rest of us can subsidize rich corporations further. Obama's tax policy is a trickle down that fails miserably.

Success? What success? You have got to be joking. Let me say first of all I'm no supporter of the president he has been a complete failure but I'm a little confused why republicans in TN are patting their self on the back for results that are worse than the nation.

Let me attempt to summarize a few stats over the past 6 years.

You do realize the unemployment rate is greater than 10% in 48 out of the 95 counties and TN overall rate of 8.5 is .9% than the national rate of 7.6. Also the annual unemployment for 2007 for Hamilton county was 4.1% and 4.9 for TN. What recovery are you republicans talking about?

In 2006-07 we see a sharp incline in population which continues to climb until 2012. In the same time period we see a rise in the number of unemployed and a decline in the actual number of employees. Since 2007 the number of unemployed has increased by 5,550 and the number employed has fallen by 5,440. Per Capita income grew at a faster pace from 2001-2007. Per capita income grew by 26% or $7,971 dollars during 2001-07 compared to 4% or $1,829 dollars from 2007-2011. From 2007-12 the employed to civilian labor force ratio rate fell by 3.32 %. Today, more than 2 years after Volkswagen opened their doors Hamilton County has fewer workers and more unemployed and slower growth in per capita income. The debt over the same 6 years has ballooned to over 200 million.

Tennessee looks almost identical to Hamilton County. In 2007 TN had 9,400 more people working than in 2012. A massive 101,100 Tennessean’s joined the unemployment line since 2007 and we have added $1,061,526,000 in net bonded debt. Since 2007 the employed to civilian labor force ratio has declined by 3.1%. Per capita income also grew at a faster pace from 2001-07, $6904 dollars or 26% compared to $4487 dollars or 13% from 2007-12. The only thing that has taken place is a shuffling of jobs from one industry to another and from one county to the other and from one state to another state.

The republican definition of free enterprise and the true conservative's definition apparently is not the same.

Whoo boy. This from a paper that runs on electricity from the TVA, and where the Smart Grid investment is already paying off, to the tune of $1.4M in one storm: https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/distribution-automation-saving-epb-millions

Couple that with the fact that the budget deficit is coming down rapidly: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2013/jul/25/barack-obama/obama-says-deficit-falling-fastest-rate-60-years/

What Drew wrote is pure fact. You may not like it, but Drew is 100% correct. Anytime the government picks winners and losers, like funding the EPB in direct competition against private companies should be a crime. Like some local companies getting Pilots and TIFS, how are those that don't get these handouts suppose to compete. Read the Constitution,it says nothing about the very handouts Drew is bringing attention to. Stimulus to the tune of trillions and the economy is in the longest, slowest, recovery in this nations history and some of you still worship the snake oil salesman. Sad.

If we had the kind of competition in the communications sector that was envisioned in the Telecommunications Act back in 1996 we'd already have this technology nationwide. The Act's stated objective was to open up markets to competition by removing regulatory barriers to entry: The conference report refers to the bill “to provide for a pro-competitive, de-regulatory national policy framework designed to accelerate rapidly private sector deployment of advanced information technologies and services to all Americans by opening all telecommunications markets to competition."

But the telecoms, cable cos, and the other big boys in the sector chose instead to fight the Act in court, congress and by just plain ignoring it and daring the government to prosecute or their struggling competitors to sue them. When Bush came into office he made Michael Powell (Colin Powell's son) head of the FCC who put the final nail in the coffin.

So instead of competing for customers with faster, better, and cheaper technology the big boys chose to slow walk the broadband build out in the USA during the 2000s letting us fall behind countries like France and South Korea that foster real competition where customers get much faster speeds at a much better price. Instead our communications sector focused on buying up market share through mergers and acquisitions, gobbling each other up and killing off smaller competitors so they could try to dominate markets and set monopoly or cartel pricing, better product be damned.

I'm all for EPB building the fiber optic smart grid and forcing Comcast and AT&T to invest and compete. That will be good for Chattanooga and it's businesses and people in the area. Competition will force all companies in the sector to innovate and provide jobs and profits at companies that build the hardware and software they need to do it.

cooljb, it is slow alright because the GOP will not allow enough Federal stimulus spending that would pull us out of it. The countries in Europe that took the slash and burn approach are the ones with the slowest recovery.

Why there are so few manufacturing jobs and so many low pay service jobs requires another who article, but the bottom line is we, the public, want items at the lowest possible price so manufacturing goes where costs to manufacture are lowest and the jobs here disappear...

Drew, Drew, Drew. What is behind all this vitriol? What is the real reason for all this bitter umbrage? The federal deficit has been cut significantly, banks have been bailed out and not one bank executive has been prosecuted, Bush tax cuts have been extended beyond their expiration date, Republican-invented Obamacare has been passed, he even acceded to industry (the golden calf of Republicans) requests to delay implementation for a year. In short, President Obama has done everything that Republicans wanted. So what exactly has the President done that is so bad? If anyone should be complaining it should be Democrats. And they do. But at least they have the manners to do it respectfully.

soakya: The president has been a complete failure? See above.

Have you been doing a Rip Van Winkle and were not informed that the economy almost tanked after 2007? Apparently you’ve also not grasped the fact that some incomes are going to come down in an depression, that’s why it’s called a depression.

The per capita income you quote is meaningless figure. That’s like saying if Bill Gates (net worth $72.7 billion) walked into a bar with 9 truck drivers in it, the per capita net worth of the people in the bar is $7.27 billion. I guess all true conservatives need to do to be rich, at least for a while, is invite Bill Gates over for a drink.

The definition of free enterprise is like the scientist’s definition of absolute zero, easy to define on paper but impossible to achieve in practice.

This editorial is an astonishing attempt to deceive the readers of this newspaper. Its transparent deception is to claim that the federal funds were intended to support only internet access, when in reality, the funds were to support the entire electrical grid.

Moreover, self-evidently, setting up the grid and laying fiber-optic cable required an expensive investment, just as it would be for a conventional cable company. That investment will not pay for itself in a short time. Any responsible business person or reporter knows that initial outlays may at first be a burden, but can later save money. In addition, this editorial ignores the national and statewide economy, claiming that the program should have been an instant success even despite a recession that started before Mr. Obama was elected, and which has led many companies and cities to tighten their budget.

Since such well-known facts were ignored in this editorial, I can only assume that it is not a considered, serious opinion, but instead an intentional attempt to misrepresent the truth as part of a politically motivated attack.

One of the very first things a Liberal, tolerant, peace loving, open minded Democrat does is either start out making a comment by taking the Lord's name in vain or he uses words that mommy (if she/he/it had one) should have washed mouth out for at 12 years old.

After the name calling subsides and they begin with what we hope is a fact loaded opinion that could help us all, we find out it is regurgitated propaganda from HufPo or MSM or Obama.

But when a fiscal and moral, ethical, Constitutional conservative begins speaking, as the editorial opinion piece reflects, you get an entirely different writing. The writer shows passion, determination, a sense of a will to see his city be successful and independent.

But of course that is criticized by The Left because of their impairment. Like being a homosexual deviant, alcoholic, porno pervert, Liberals also can change and become better humanoids. So embracing change is good especially if it is towards the 10 Commandments and not away from them.

The city-owned electric utility fiber optic internet, telephone, and HD television product is superb. The fiber optic smart grid is superior as well - rerouting and restoring electrical power within seconds as a result of high winds associated with a storm or other calamity. I have experienced this amazing self-healing ability a number of times in my home since our local smart grid has gone online. I have 100 bps of internet service (the lowest tier) in my home at a very reasonable cost. A town our size would have been waiting for YEARS for high speed internet and smart grid technology to filter down to our community (when and if?) these types of speeds and efficiency were made available by national cable and telephone conglomerates. Instead we lead the country with a home-grown effort that even embarrasses the great Google monolith in the scope of its implementation. For this bit local government risk taking and entrepreneurship I must take exception and say "well done".

I love it, finally someone with the conjones to stand up to the idiots in Dirty City. It does not matter, Republican or Democrat, it just one wing or the other of The Big Government Party. As we can see from the debt clock, they thrive on going deeper and deeper into debt. They talk about reducing deficits but it still is more than we bring in with personal and business taxes, so the debt keeps climbing. Both wings do it but will never admit it.

Drew's editorial is a one-sided attack on the EPB. He might not like the EPB and their funding, but I do take exception when he says this money has gone to waste. The smart grid has reduced the amount of blackouts during our frequent storms of late, and EPB's internet service kills anything that Comcast can offer. Drew shows that he is a technological Luddite with this quote: "EPB decided to build a souped-up version of the Smart Grid with fiber optics rather than more cost-effective wireless technology."

This editorial could have been written at any time in the past few months and I thought it was poor form that Drew chose the President's visit as a pretense for his anti-EPB spiel.

Don't worry, Drew. I hear Amazon is hiring.

Thank you Chattanooga Times for saying what so many do outside the printed world ! There is no need to worry about the collectivists of any stripe (socialists/communists/fascists/ greenies/welfare statists); they are the same the world over - yes, I have lived in many countries and speak several languages - and they are all the same; not too bright, have never any solutions, just anger and hatred for those who believe in liberty, justice, property rights, and all that made the U.S. the shining example of what a contry could be if individual liberty florished. I love this country for what it used to be and can again if reason and logic be allowed to rule.

Charivari said: The federal deficit has been cut significantly, banks have been bailed out and not one bank executive has been prosecuted, Bush tax cuts have been extended beyond their expiration date, Republican-invented Obamacare has been passed,

WOW - only a seriously ignorant and delusional person would say this and see nothing wrong with it...

  1. The "Bush Tax Cuts" were signed into extension by OBAMA.
  2. The bailouts and failure to prosecute were signed into legislation by OBAMA.
  3. Saying the Republican-invented Obamacare is anything but Obama's is simply too stupid to even address. It's called "OBAMAcare" for a reason.
  4. The deficit hasn't been reduced! The sequestration that OBAMA allowed to go into effect (in spite of saying on nat'l television several times he would NEVER allow it to happen) cut the military budget so much we're no longer at mission readiness as a nation, HOWEVER - OBAMA is taking vacations that are costing taxpayers nearly $200,000,000. That's money that could have averted sequestration!

I'd say go drink some more Kool-Aid, charivari, but it looks like you've had more than enough.

This is more of the same: serious conservative anger and name-calling without anything to really back it up or justify it. I was at least hoping for a broad tirade here, but the guy went on about his disappointments with EPB internet. That's a good reason to tell the leader of the free world to shove it? Because you're sad about EPB? In Chattanooga, I'm always hearing about how Obama is the most despicable man alive, responsible for ruining everything because . . . why? A very theoretical, general quibble about the relationship between federal spending and economic growth? Wow, Adam Smith, you're on fire! He was slow to act on Syria? He fiddled with the Clean Air Act regs? Really? His timid healthcare plan may not work? The last president spent TRILLIONS on warfare and piloted the country into a deep recession, but Obama should be shunned because Drew Johnson's internet is too slow? Go ahead and accuse the guy of doing a mediocre job, but frothing, spitting, and foot stomping does not look like dissent. It just looks stupid.

wilder125, you are correct. Drew did give much content to consider as I feel he always did in his writing. That is why so many commented on his pieces. The article focused on the waste of tax payer money on public-private partnerships between big business and big government that destroy capitalism and enrich a very few well connected individuals. It is the heart and soul of sustainable development.

Bret, do you not understand that if the SMART Grid was financed with private capital, Drew would have no opinion on it at all therefore he would have never mentioned it? I will try to speak for him by saying that he does not care if someone throws away their OWN money but when it is ours, then he (along with the rest of us) should be keenly aware and critical of these projects. As it stands the Volkswagons, Amazons, Wackers, etc... are political entities now because of their public financing. They are the new "Too big to fail..." Government voted for them, the TFP parades and endless stream of feel-good stories about job creation and corporate social responsibility to the community and we continue to have our tax revenue drained. That I think is worth talking about and Drew got fired for it in my opinion.

The Chamber of Commerce is probably a secret part of the editorial board for this paper. At minimum, don't think there wasn't pressure from them as well as a lot of other non-governmental organizations to have him removed. If it wasn't, why not give him a chance to apologize? He was one strike and you're out. Don't think there wasn't pressure from Mayor Berke as well. Wait till you see all of Berke's redevelopment schemes coming our way that I believe Drew would have covered.

Constantly spouting divisive rhetoric when you promised to be a 'Purple' President... is a failure. Lying through your teeth, changing stories, making up stories... is a failure. Letting 4 men die in Benghazi so that you can continue your reign as Dictator in Chief... is a failure. Forcing a Health Care plan that is now causing even your supporters, the Unions, to condemn it.. is a failure. Having and defending a lying attorney general who uses his office to attack your political opponents, violating every ethical principle of the office... is a failure. Using the IRS to attack your political opponents.. is a failure. Rehashing the same economic stimulus plan that is rejected by both Democrats and Republicans...is a failure. Producing budgets that are rejected in wholesale by both Republicans and Democrats.. is a failure. And lying to your brainwashed kool-aid drinking supporters just because you can get away with it because they're either too ignorant or too emotionally bought into your failed Presidency.. is a failure. And the blinders you Liberals wear... and the hypocrisies you tolerate in yourselves... and the willingness to sacrifice America for the sake of your self-worship in your deluded and idiotic notions of self-righteousness makes you all bigger failures than Obama is. Why is it when someone speaks the truth they're called hateful names, that they racist, or have a grudge against the President. I believe he is the first president to divide this country. As long as we are fighting against one another he and his followers can find more things to weaken this country. Now that school year is beginning again. My son has made an awesome statement of truth....

{I have come to realize that our school system is doing what our government is doing to the people of the United States. They want us to buy our kids a huge list of supplies, then tell us not to put our child's name on them so all the kids can use them. To me that is the same as the government saying we have to pay more so others can have some too. So they now are teaching the kids redistribution of wealth at a young age. So they don't argue when there our age cause they won't know any better.}So proud of him and his wife..

So I guess the ones who are against this article think it's Ok to work your butts off only to have someone get what you worked for??? Pretty sad you think that way of thinking is Ok. Have a great day.. GBU all

I had been barred from viewing this article due to not having an account with this paper/site.....The higher-ups REALLY DONT WANT THIS VIEWED~! funny ALL the measures taken so as to not be viewed....(i.e.- firing this editor, taking account creating measures, etc.). Whoever fired this editor and prompted the firing and questioning of its content should be ASHAMED. We truly no longer live in a free america where freedom of speech is accepted. Now everyone's "freedom of speech" and our rights are yanked and you/me end up unemployed and looking for the bread line because we can no longer feed our families. This unemployment problem is RAMPANT and every "effort" to turn it around is an obvious farce. I feel for you Drew Johnson... I'm very sorry this happened to you. And all the hatred in the commenters talking about "republican" this, etc.- The point is that People of all backgrounds are impacted by the current state of our government. Stop pointing fingers at each other and instead feel SOMETHING for ourselves and someone else's currrent situation. THIS IS WRONG. EVERYWHERE (the unemployment rate, etc etc etc) we are all affected. Hoping for our current state to have a literal rebound for the better. Keep the hope, faith, and love for one another. We're all in this situation. Make the best of it as best you can instead of letting the hate consume. But as far as this newspaper is concerned- you're another statistic of the pressure that helps create this downswing in our economy. Your choice in firing this editor IS illegal and I hope that someone atones for it. I hope (Mr. Drew Johnson) that you are able to pick up an IMMACULATE lawyer and have the final laugh. And to whoever made the moves to fire him- you made the wrong decision. Morally wrong. And I will be unsubscribing as quick as I subscribed to write this- as I hope others wake up and do.

THIS IS FROM "tfp"'S SITE OF THEIR "ETHICS POLICY": WHAT A CROCK~!

Ethics policy for the Chattanooga Times Free Press Nothing is more sacred to us than the readers' trust in us to tell the truth, to be accurate, fair and impartial. We must be free of conflicts of interest. We must avoid the perception of conflicts of interest. As journalists we cannot simply use these standards as slogans; they must be a living truth evident in everything we say, do and print. Any failure, by any one of us, to follow these journalistic truths undermines the credibility of our newspaper as an entity, of each of us as individuals and of our craft. What follows is a guide - a way of helping you determine what you should do as you go about your job. It does not foresee every action or situation. It simply gives guidance along the way. Any time - every time - you find yourself wondering what is the correct thing to do, check this policy and talk to the executive editor. Seek advice.

Jake Jackson, Please listen to yourself. We understand that the government invested in the entire electrical grid as you say. By your own words you are showing how this investment should not have been made and would have never been made with private money:

  1. "That investment will not pay for itself in a short time."

How long JakeJackson? 3 years? 5 years? 25 Years? Would you invest your money if you had no clear payback? A corporation will not approve a project beyond a 24 month payback; usually 12. But government is another story...

  1. "...initial outlays may at first be a burden, but can later save money."

CAN Jakejackson? Would you invest in something if it CAN save you money? What happens if it doesn't "save money"? Then those "initial outlays" become an ongoing burden that has no end.

JakeJackson, that is what Drew was fighting: Wasteful government "investments" that will NEVER live up to their promises thereby compounding our ever growing debt problem that burdens us and compromises our children's future.
