The Ostrich

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

If there's climate change, which there always has been, we don't have damn to do with it.

It is utterly amazing the things people will deny to fit into a political agenda. Fister, you keep spewing the same crap about "the guy in Paris". You climate change deniers are in a very minute group ~ thankfully, we have more sane people in this country than ideological knuckle draggers. We can officially stop wondering if there is a "consensus" on global warming among scientists. A new study by James Lawrence Powell found only a single dissenter out of 9,136 authors who denied that global warming was man-made. Powell looked at more than 2,000 studies published in peer-reviewed journals from November 2012 through December 2013 and came up with just one that didn’t believe in man-made global warming.

Did Mr. Bennett have a photograph to work from or did the BBF Conservative pose in person?

Time for church. The Independent Baptist Church is preaching this Sunday in favor of the flat-earth, disease caused by demons, and the moon landings were filmed on a Hollywood soundstage by Satan.

Scientist may not agree on how severe the problem is, all the time, but 97% agree that there is a problem, that it needs to be addressed, and that there are dire consequences if it continues to be ignored.

"Always a deadline, 5 years, 10 years. a-holes."

Well think about it; If nothing is done, eventually the Earth will rebel, and quite harshly.

Clearly you are not aware that air conditioning is not the evil it once was. Freon used in almost all automotive, commercial, and home air conditioners are now CFC free.

CFC's that were once a staple in spray cans, which were outlawed, have been replaced by safer alternatives.

CFC's were responsible for depleting the Earth's Ozone layer that protects us from harmful UV rays.

And the conversions are paying off. The Ozone layer that was previously thinning at an alarming rate is slowly healing. The latest projections by Scientists say that the Earth's Ozone layer will be back to normal by the year 2045.

http://www.ecoworld.com/atmosphere/atmospheric-science/ozone-depletion-improves.html

http://infosoupdailybuzz.blogspot.com/2010/09/ozone-layer-getting-better-not-thinning.html

Have no fear climate deniers, there are more of us than there are of you, and you're out-voted on this too.

The Earth will be maintained over your ignorant objections.

Science has laid out a case, repeatedly, that projects consequences if we do not become stewards of the Earth, in all respects.

No one is asking anyone to give up living a comfortable life, but there are common sense things that everyone can do to be kinder to the Earth.

Most all of them will save you money, IF you will adopt some of those changes, and what's wrong with that?

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” Isaac Asimov

Isaac had it dead right. The only difference is that in the case of the current thread of anti-intellectualism, the end game is far more stark and final. Standing on a soap box and barking Fox Noise/Americans for Prosperity anti-science talking points that we cannot affect the Earth's climate is like saying we could not beat Stone Mountain into gravel with sledge hammers. Sure we could. The difference is that the same scientific evidence will exist unchanged when Earth vomits in our faces and human existence comes to a close just as the pile of gravel will still be granite - just far less inspiring to observe. We've been swinging away at the Earth's stable, life nurturing climate mountain for decades and only the blind and dumb deny the changes we have already wrought and deny the accelerating rate and seriousness of those changes.

It's easy to see the liberal attack template in action here. First, an ad hominem attack is launched. Second, some general emoting is offered, or just another attack on the opponent. Third, toss out a self-righteous comment to jump start the process of feeling good about yourself the rest of the day.

People often change their tunes when they have some skin in the game; something to lose. I often hear the arguement that it is better to be known for what we are for than for what we are against. I would ask the true believers in man made global warming leading to catastrophe to put forth some ideas that would solve this.

They have succeeded in putting up such fierce resistance that it is probably already too late. We will most likely be swept away in a tsunami of stupidity and indolence, still arguing with infantile idiots over something that should have been settled a long time ago.

All the arguments have been made about the reality of AGW and made by the very scientists (the experts in their field) who are most likely to know what they're talking about, yet these dumbasses choose to listen instead to paid-off shills, people with scant or no scientific credentials, and right-wing TV and radio talking heads as they spread their biased OPINIONS and their bogus science and ideologically biased bullsh#t and whine about a "liberal conspiracy." Really, you guys?? Liberal conspiracy?? Remember when scientists were first making the argument, back in the 70s and 80s and even into the 90s, that cigarette smoking caused cancer? The tobacco companies spared no expense to spread the lie that the findings of those scientists were not valid. They spent untold millions and billions, spreading their BS propaganda and hiring their own "scientists" to lie for them, trying to make the public believe that tobacco was harmless. Most people could see right through the lies of the tobacco companies and related industries. It was obvious that they had a lot to lose if the actual scientists' findings were true. Well, fast forward to today. The scientists' findings about the dangers of tobacco became more conclusive. Nobody today in their right mind doubts that cigarette smoking causes cancer.

The exact same propaganda campaign is going on today, only this time it's Big Oil and the polluting industries who are spreading the lies. And you pitiful brain-dead sheeple who are buying into their crap are looking more and more stupid every day as you cling to your ideologically biased beliefs and nonsense about a "liberal conspiracy." Without certain laws and regulations and a centralized government acing on behalf of the people, those who are rich and successful today never would have even had a chance to reach their pinnacles of financial success. The sort of individual freedom you libertarians pine for has never existed and never will. 1) None exists

2) These few who claim such will not submit their data for peer review to other scientists because they don't really have any proof.

Because they don't have any proof, just speculation.

The unsuspecting sheep then make the connection on their own that MANKIND is causing global warming/climate change.

Librul- Your reply makes me sad as much as anything as it speaks directly to the death of rational thought and debate. I put forth a very simple question. All I was interested in was a brief outline of an energy policy that would be something you could get behind. I asked you to convince me that your position is correct. To this you respond with three paragraphs of personal attack. I don’t know you. You may be a wonderful person, and we simply disagree on an issue. It speaks volumes that you would rather make a personal attack then simply state your position clearly. The fact that you would like to relegate those that may differ from you to the camp of idiocy does not in any way speak to the validity of your truth claims.

Wallyworld- Another fantastic example of the template applied. You totally nailed number 1. You took a little creative license with number 2. You really dropped the ball on number 3. I don’t watch porn or Nascar. You should be careful here and simply stick to the script you’ve been given. Number 3 is the self-righteous statement.

For a perfect example of typical right-wing stupidity and blind-folded, willful ignorance, all one need do is look at con-man's comment. EVERYTHING of what he said is a bald-faced lie. What sort of alternate universe are you idiotic deniers living in????

First off, it is not just a "few" scientists who are in agreement about human induced global warming; it is thousands of scientists worldwide and practically every existing scientific agency and academy that stands behind the science of AGW. These are the very people you should be listening to, folks - not Limbaugh or Hannity or Marco Rubio or the Koch brothers!

He further states that the science does not exist. The facts and overwhelming evidence have existed for years now! He might as well say that the sun does not exist, that things are just as likely to fall UP as to fall DOWN when we drop them, or that there is no proof that the world is round.

As for those "few" not submitting their data for peer review...their data has constantly and consistently been peer reviewed! Over and over and over again. That is why so many other scientists have agreed with them...because they have peer reviewed it! But the ones who are expressing mere OPINIONS about climate change, with little or no science to back it up, are the ones he and the other deniers are choosing to believe.

My god, the stupidity and willful ignorance among you deniers is so overwhelming, it's downright depressing. It makes me sick to think that there really is this much rampant idiocy in America. What with the fundies and the teabaggers, this country has little hope of getting out of this cesspool of blind faith and ignorance that keeps holding us down.

But you deniers are exhibiting such shameful idiocy in refusing to SEE the obvious. You choose to listen to obvious shills, charlatans, and know-nothings instead of the very people (experts in their field) that you should be listening to. This from the following American scientific societies:

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE:

"The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society." (2006)3

AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY:

"Comprehensive scientific assessments of our current and potential future climates clearly indicate that climate change is real, largely attributable to emissions from human activities, and potentially a very serious problem." (2004)4

AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION:

"Human‐induced climate change requires urgent action. Humanity is the major influence on the global climate change observed over the past 50 years. Rapid societal responses can significantly lessen negative outcomes." (Adopted 2003, revised and reaffirmed 2007, 2012, 2013)5

AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION:

"Our AMA ... supports the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fourth assessment report and concurs with the scientific consensus that the Earth is undergoing adverse global climate change and that anthropogenic contributions are significant." (2013)

AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY:

"It is clear from extensive scientific evidence that the dominant cause of the rapid change in climate of the past half century is human-induced increases in the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), chlorofluorocarbons, methane, and nitrous oxide." (2012)

AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY:

"The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now." (2007)

THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA:

"The Geological Society of America (GSA) concurs with assessments by the National Academies of Science (2005), the National Research Council (2006), and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007) that global climate has warmed and that human activities (mainly greenhouse‐gas emissions) account for most of the warming since the middle 1900s." (2006; revised 2010)

And this joint statement from the international science academies: "Climate change is real. There will always be uncertainty in understanding a system as complex as the world’s climate. However there is now strong evidence that significant global warming is occurring. The evidence comes from direct measurements of rising surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures and from phenomena such as increases in average global sea levels, retreating glaciers, and changes to many physical and biological systems. It is likely that most of the warming in recent decades can be attributed to human activities (IPCC 2001)." (2005, 11 international science academies)

INTERGOVERNMENTAL PANEL ON CLIMATE CHANGE: “Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level.”13

“Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely* due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.”14

*IPCC defines ‘very likely’ as greater than 90 percent probability of occurrence.

I've never seen one entry from a liberal stating that.

Where then, is this particular hypocrisy charge coming from?

I do have my own personal air conditioning story to tell;

Tomorrow, a new system is going to be installed in my home. It will be one that will draw an average of 11 amps of electricity all four seasons.

Older systems draw an average of 25 amps and more.

How much money and electricity am I going to save? Lots.

Connie, you would have a point if supporters of saving energy were calling for everyone to give up their comfort in order to save the Earth.

No one I am aware of is doing any such thing.

I save energy in everything I do for the cost savings it presents me when I pay my bills and when I fill up my gas tank on my car.

A penny saved is a penny earned. That is very true when it comes to taking solid, sensible steps to conserve energy and our natural resources.

You folk are the ones who are attaching political distinctions to the issue.

If there is one thing the American people SHOULD set aside from politics, it is this very issue.

You came in here today, and the other day, ready to troll this forum with your arrogant attitude, intent on bashing liberals, because you know that the vast majority of liberals are supporters of climate change science.

All you have done however, is to solidify your reputation for stupidity and your propensity to argue with a knot hole in a fence, if it could respond back.

What would God think of your actions? He gave us all this Earth. He gave us all a brain to think with, to reason, to balance and counter-balance issues and problems.

Your low-level approach to everything from your religion to this issue, leaves EVERYONE scratching their heads every time you post.

You fashion yourself as this witty guy, believing that you are succinct in every word you type. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

You are totally in need of a personality transformation, and I hope you self-assess and take steps to demonstrate a better persona than the one you have now.

Then again...you are likely lost in the forest, with no hope of ever finding your way out into the real world ever again.

I was impressed with the Forbes article myself. It most certainly did outline a breaking of insurance companies from the GOP, based on climate changes happening today.

If insurers keep finding reasons to not vote for Republicans, well...Republicans are going to lose millions of votes that previously were in the bag for the party.

Fairmon, you're still attributing to me, that which I don't stand for. But I will let you in on a few things I do.

At one time in this nation, we had a great many first class citizens. We were a manufacturing based economy. We now have had a growing of the second and third class to the point that there aren't enough first class citizens to support the mandatory, much less elective services that our Government supplies for the nation.

You've made mention several times that our economy has slipped to one that is service based.

If libertarians want to be noticed, maybe they could be the ones who start coming up with a plan to right this nation with good jobs and a plan to bring back a solid manufacturing base.

Politicians today, who ARE in power, are not coming up with any substantive plans to do this, despite it being the hope that this nation must have, if we are ever going to get back on track to being what we once were.

If most people in this nation had the availability to seek a good job, there wouldn't be all this squabbling over what revenue there was coming in. There would be more to do the things that are needed and some left over to work down the debts that this nation has accrued.

That Sir, is what I stand for.

Reality in the year 2014 is much different, so there are those who can afford to pay taxes, and those who cannot afford to pay taxes.

Increasing the number of people who can afford to pay taxes is the only plan that will reform this nation and satisfy the most people, over any and all plans currently being discussed in Washington D.C.

It's all about long-term, high paying jobs.

May 19, 2014 at 8:55 a.m.
inquiringmind said...

alprova, manufacturing is on an upsurge in the US. The US economy did not so much slip to a service-based economy as the education level and nature of other industrial jobs increased.

If everybody had high paying jobs we would be in the same boat with rampant inflation washing out the "high" part of wages.

The bottom line is we either have a relative few people making a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes, or a lot of people working lower paying jobs paying less taxes, or we ignore the unemployed at risk of electoral rebellion.

We do agree but I would settle for good paying jobs at a livable wage with KSA being recognized and compensated appropriately. I see no one offering anything toward providing an opportunity to develop the requisite skills for meaningful non-college jobs such as craft skills. I see no discussion of cleaning up the business tax boondoggle with a competitive rate. Ireland is at 11.5% with many U.S. and European countries creating a domicile there. Any U.S. company can deposit their foreign profits to a more business friendly country and save millions in taxes. Unfortunately no party including Libertarian approaches tackling this monster. Your party is the worst at blasting business then accepting their contributions and quietly accommodating them. The republicans are as bad at wanting to pick winners and losers while both talk about how important small businesses are while they assist those larger in devouring or destroying them.

So much money involved and those in office too long are so out of touch with the non-D.C. world they are in fantasy land.

Zableed, like ayb, I too challenge you to come up with a verifiable list. The only such list you might possibly come up with is a petition from a few years ago that was signed by approximately 30,000 people stating that they did not accept the science of anthropogenic global warming. Admittedly that is a lot of people. But if you think about referring to that list as an example of how many scientists disagree with the AGW scientists, I want you to be sure to study up on the facts of that petition first. The vast majority of signees were not even scientists. And fewer than 2% were actual climatologists! That petition ended up on the internet where anyone, regardless of scientific credentials or lack thereof (mostly a lack thereof), could sign it. It is as bogus as a faith healer or a snake oil salesman. But I'm sure you have some other verifiable "list," do you not? And I'm talking about a list of actual scientists who have devoted intensive research to climate change, not just random know-nothings who happen to disagree. So go ahead, chump. It must be nice living in your insulated little bubble of individuality, a vacuum, where other people's lives have no connection to yours - or so you like to think. But the hard cold fact of the matter is that we are all connected in various ways, and other people's lives DO have repercussions for all of us.

The severity of damage to their bodies that people suffer from not wearing seat belts is oftentimes exponentially greater than what seat belt wearers sustain. It can mean the difference between someone walking away from an accident, or at worst having to stay overnight in the hospital, to having to stay weeks in intensive care. The cost to the insurance companies, and eventually the cost to all of us down the road (in the form of higher premiums, for one thing) will take its toll on all of us. The same goes for out of control obesity and diabetes, causing insurance companies to spend millions and billions on treatment. That cost, too, is eventually passed on to us.

I really don't get how you libertarians/anarchists don't get that. How can you be so naïve and childish to think that we are not all in this together? Some things, like enforced seat belt laws, no smoking zones, low wattage energy efficient light bulbs, and clean-air/clean-water regulations are not Hitlerian. Those are just common sense laws that make life a little easier and better for all of us. Oops... I uttered that phrase that you "individual liberty" folks don't like to hear - "all of us." Sorry. Good point, im. It does sound like a lot of people on paper but in the overall scheme of things it is infinitesimally small.

In America entirely too much credence is even given to climate change deniers. Our media is so afraid of appearing "liberal" (thanks to the "liberal media" lie perpetually mouthed by the RWNJs) that they bend over backward to accommodate the deniers, creationists and anti-science loonies, making it appear that their arguments are legitimate. But the media in most other countries do not validate the deniers and anti-science morons as having a legitimate argument worth even bringing to the table for debate. There the kooks are looked upon with the rightful derision they deserve.

As many as 20% of all American scientists have said that they are considering moving overseas because the fundies and teabaggers have spread their anti-science hysteria so extensively throughout the country. And many climate scientists have said that the effects of AGW are actually worse than they are reporting, but they are already held in such low esteem by the anti-science crowd and one entire party of our government (the GOP) that they dare not reveal just how dire the situation really is.

Okay...let me make it more clear, since you are determined to be an ass.

What possible advantage could you, as an admitted child molester, have over anyone else who participates in thie forum?

And you have the audacity to call someone else a loser?

Al, I hold JD's comments and opinions in as much regard as I do the buzzing of a gnat. One swat and a gnat is dispensed with. Of course, gnats have the pesky habit of always coming back and buzzing around, like JD here (his entire life apparently consists of buzzing on this forum 24/7, each and every day of the year). But still, he's just a gnat; his jabs and insults have no sting. I couldn't care less what his opinion of me or his opinion of my comments might be.

Admitted child molester?? Bwahahaha you idjit. I was having you on, but you're too stupid to sense it. I must admit, however, that it surprises me that your posse believes any of the lies you spin about me. Oh well, have fun losers. And don't forget, Ahab, I have a very long memory.

Nothing, I repeat nothing, is going to happen in 500 days. Nothing. Panic and chaos. You libs love that so you can gain from it.

Meanwhile, lawless a-holes, like Congressman Louis Guitierrez, are calling for the laws to be ignored until amnesty is passed. He should be removed from office. He's sworn to uphold the law. I guess since BO won't, so he feels emboldened to do the same.

global warming/climate change/climate disruption/mother earth's depends leaking is all a big f'ing distraction.

jobs, jobs, economy and illegal aliens getting a free pass and taking jobs from citizens will be the issue in 2014 mid-terms. Nobody gives a $hit about climate change at the voting booth.

Zableedingfistual, Waiting on that list of scientists, that long list of thousands of scientists you promised who refute climate change.

And Benny Hinn, John Hagee, Ernest Angley, Billy Graham, Mike Huckabee, and Dr. Suess don't count. Real scientists. You said it would be easy to do.

Hurry, you only have 500 days to provide that information. But you can't.

By the way, did BBF Conservative visit your house yet to check your closets?

Well then, the joke is on you, because you were the very one to type your admission to another poster. Can't pin that on anyone else this time.

"I must admit, however, that it surprises me that your posse believes any of the lies you spin about me."

I never once called you the child molester, that is until you fessed up to it from your own computer.

It's no longer about what I've typed about you. You admitted it.

"Oh well, have fun losers. And don't forget, Ahab, I have a very long memory."

Apparently not. You can't even remember whether or not you are a sex offender and nothing at all would prompt me to make such an admission in a public forum, like you did.

Z-man, you can count on the Republicans to cave on amnesty. They know they are doomed without it.

Might as well get the crying over with, because they will pass an amnesty bill no later than mid-summer.

Alpo says "I never once called you the child molester..." I love how you parse words, you pathetic little coward.

Then follows with "That sounds vaguely like a threat and considering your record".... What record is that little round man?

Actually, I am very careful what I type. You were raising hell for calling you a child molester without my even accusing you of being one. I ASKED if you were related to the man.

Then last night, you come out and admit you ARE the man. Then you're beck to denying it all.

And you claim you never lie in this forum. Well it is positive that you're telling lies today. How can you expect ANYONE to believe you?

"What record is that little round man?"

You know which record. You copped to it last night. And after doing that, you have the nerve to call someone else a "loser."

Man oh man, there is no way under heaven that I would admit to being someone I was not, especially a man like Jack Dana Dennis, unless it was true.

You did, and no one assisted you in that.

I'd like to help you out with this one, but your nasty disposition keeps me from it. I wonder how you live with yourself, the way you treat people publicly.

Payback is indeed a bitch, and you STILL won't quit. I guess you'll be changing your identity again, but it won't be long until you give yourself away. You can't help yourself.

I'm a nice guy. I have lots of friends. My wife loves me very much.

You like starting crap. Well some of it backfired, didn't it?

You'll learn, one day.

Still waiting on that list Fister. If it is "so long", it shouldn't take this long for you to post it.

"JD, I think you are confusing me with someone who gives a rat's ass what you think."

Five stars.

I find nothing to grin about after claiming to be the child molesting Jack Dana Dennis. That one's gonna stick with you for quite sometime. And you made the claim all on your own.

No one stuck a gun to your head.

You actually seem to be proud of yourself.

Wow!!

Lots. You? You're dance card is full for 16 hours a day between this forum and Twitter.

That's a good thing too.

You're to busy to give some child nightmares for the rest of their life.

You admitted it.
