Cameron Harbor building collapse
Two partially-constructed buildings in a planned $100-million riverfront housing development collapsed this morning, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department.
One construction worker was seriously injured and several others suffered minor injuries like scrapes and cuts, said Bruce Garner, spokesman for the fire department.
The incident happened at about 10:15 a.m. today near Molly Lane, Garner said. The structures that collapsed looked like three-story houses.
A third structure adjacent to the two that collapsed is now teetering to one side and will have to be demolished, Garner said.
"It's clearly leaning in one direction," he said.
Workers at the site blamed wind for the collapse and said five or six people were inside one building when it went down.
"It sounded like the wind or something," said one worker, who asked not to be identified. "Next thing I know, I got the roof on my back."
Firefighters initially responded to a call for a building collapse with people trapped inside, Garner added.
"Fortunately when we got here, all the construction workers were out," he said. "They pulled themselves out or they ran out."
The development, dubbed Cameron Harbor, is expected to eventually include 235 apartments, 20-single family homes, 19 townhomes and 37 boat slips.
